Global Web Experts to Meet in Lisbon for W3C's Annual Technical Plenary
Future of the Web's Technical Roadmap is Focus of Week-long Conference
http://www.w3.org/ — 7 September 2016 — In August this year the world celebrated the 25th anniversary of the Web being offered as a publicly available service, invented by W3C Director Sir Tim Berners-Lee while working at CERN. But did you ever wonder how the Web has evolved to have rich video and graphics capabilities, work on so many devices, in so many languages and be accessible for those with disabilities? It's largely because of Web standards developed by the World Wide Web Consortium.
The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) will host more than 500 technical experts from around the globe the week of 19-23 September 2016 in Lisbon, Portugal at the W3C's annual Technical Plenary and Advisory Committee (TPAC) meeting. The annual W3C event brings together global experts in Web technologies who are building the next generation standards for the future of the Web as part of W3C's mission "to lead the Web to its full potential."
Topping the discussions of the W3C technical groups chartered to identify emerging technologies for standardization or to develop the Web standards -- the building blocks that make the Web open and interoperable -- include a strong industry focus on:
- Automotive - The Web and Automotive Working Group is enabling Web connectivity through in-vehicle infotainment systems and vehicle data access protocols. This means consumers will soon have access to more data and services from their vehicles such as road, weather and shopping information.
- Digital Publishing - The Publishing Community and Digital Publishing Interest Group will address the evolution of electronic books and how to bring the requirements of publishers to the Web for richer reading and learning experiences.
- Entertainment- The Web and TV Interest Group is evaluating new requirements for the entertainment industry and the Second Screen Presentation Working Group is working to define APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) that enable Web pages to use secondary screens to display Web content.
- Telecommunications - The Web Real Time Communications Working Group is bringing audio and video communications anywhere, on any network.
- Web of Data - The Data on the Web Best Practices Working Group is creating standard data exchange formats, models, tools, and guidance to ensure that Data on the Web is interoperable.
- Web Payments - The Web Payments Working Group is developing an API to streamline the online "check-out" process and make payments easier and more secure on the Web.
- Web Security - The Web Authentication Working Group is working on more secure and flexible alternatives to password-based log-ins on the Web.
- Web of Things - The Web of Things Interest Group seeks to counter the fragmentation of the Internet of Things (IoT) though standardized metadata that enables easy integration across IoT platforms and application domains.
Although the Technical Plenary meetings themselves are only open to W3C members and invited experts, we invite the news media to schedule private interviews, 15 to 30 minutes in length, with W3C CEO Dr. Jeff Jaffe and potentially other W3C experts on Wednesday, 21 September 2016 at the conference venue, Centro de Congressos de Lisboa, Praça Indústrias, between 10:00am and 5:00pm.
