Introduction

The World Wide Web Consortium is seeking a remote full-time staff member to lead our data on the web standardization work.

As part of the Technical Strategy team of W3C, this is an opportunity for a unique individual to be a member of the team responsible for the design of next generation World Wide Web capabilities and lead a variety of industry, academic, and user communities toward the development of standards that facilitate the Web of Data.

The ideal candidate will have a successful track record of contributing to data standards, and expertise to build consensus in a multi-stakeholder group. We are looking for an assertive and self-motivated person who is enthusiastic about W3C’s vision and mission.

Responsibilities

You will:

  • Be responsible for creating and supporting W3C Working Groups, such as the Web of Things Working Group, as well as participating in data-related Community Groups. As Working Group staff contact, you will be asked to edit technical reports, develop change proposals, monitor progress, produce tests, respond to clarification requests, and negotiate with stakeholders.
  • Communicate and seek consensus with W3C Members and the community at-large on data issues and trends.
  • Build support among user and vendor communities for W3C data-related standards by illustrating the benefits to those communities and helping them understand the means of participating in the creation of a Web of Data.

Required skills and experience

  • 5+ years of relevant work experience
  • Extensive knowledge of data technologies and methodologies, such as JSON, JSON-LD, XML, Linked Data
  • Knowledge of IoT technologies, such as Web of Things
  • Software development experience in two or more languages
  • Familiarity with core web technologies, such as HTML, HTTP, Web APIs, and scripting
  • Familiarity with existing W3C data standards, such as Verifiable Credentials
  • Ability to think strategically about structured data challenges as they fit in the global web ecosystem
  • Ability to help resolve technical architectural data issues
  • Ability to negotiate and build consensus across a range of stakeholder views
  • Excellent spoken and written communication skills in English
  • Intellectual curiosity and creative problem-solving
  • Project management skills with proven ability to deliver on multiple concurrent projects and adapt to changing organizational needs
  • Demonstrated ability to research, analyze and communicate in a clear, compelling, and culturally competent fashion, both verbally and in a variety of written formats, for a variety of audiences, including to technically-focused and non-technical ones
  • Collaborative work style and a successful track record working independently as well as with colleagues in a geographically dispersed global organization
  • Ability to travel internationally
  • Ability to work remotely

Beneficial skills and experience

  • Experience addressing data standards issues globally; experience liaising with standards bodies, including IETF, IEEE, or other standard organizations
  • Familiarity with GitHub
  • Appreciation of the W3C standards development Process
  • Understanding of the web industry and its market, practices, and product development cycles
