The Team provides technical leadership about Web technologies, organizes and manages W3C activities to reach goals within practical constraints (such as resources available), and communicates with the Members and the public about the Web and W3C technologies. W3C is unique among standards bodies for its full-time staff of Web experts.

Web Accessibility Engineer (China)

The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) is an international community where Member organizations, a staff and the public work together to develop Web standards. W3C's mission is to lead the Web to its full potential.

W3C seeks a full-time Web Accessibility Engineer to be based at Beihang University in Beijing, China. This individual will help ensure accessibility of the Web for people with disabilities and older users, with an emphasis on accessibility of Web technologies and guidelines, mobile accessibility, and accessibility education and outreach.

Responsibilities:

Work will involve engagement as a Team contact with a variety of working groups and with W3C Member organizations and the public. This includes representatives of the Web industry, disability community, accessibility researchers, education and government interested in accessibility of the Web internationally and also in the Chinese community.

Requirements:

  • A minimum of three years’ experience in the web accessibility field;
  • In-depth understanding of the user requirements of people with disabilities and older users, with regard to accessibility of the web;
  • Familiarity with accessibility barriers and solutions, including assistive technologies, for diverse types of information and communications technologies (ICT) including the web;
  • In-depth familiarity with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0; the Authoring Tool Accessibility Guidelines (ATAG) 2.0; the User Agent Accessibility Guidelines (UAAG); and Accessible Rich Internet Applications (WAI-ARIA);
  • The ability to work remotely with collaborative working groups and the W3C global team, including some evening and night hours.
  • Strong spoken and written English skills.

Preferred:

  • Previous work experience in an international setting.
  • Familiarity with mobile accessibility.
  • Previous experience with collaborative working groups and consensus decision processes.
  • Technical writing training or experience.
  • Familiarity with key W3C technologies including HTML5 and CSS.

The position is located at Beihang University, No. 37 Xueyuan Road, Haidian District, Beijing, China. Occasional international and domestic travel is required, as well as the ability to work remotely with collaborative working groups and the W3C global team.

Web Standard Expert (China)

The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) is looking for a new, full-time staff member to be located at Beihang University in Beijing, the W3C Host in China, to assist, as team contact, W3C Working Groups developing technical specifications for the Web Platform.

This is an opportunity for a unique individual to be part of the team responsible for the design of next generation World Wide Web Technologies and to lead a variety of industry and user groups toward the development of technologies that enhance the functionality of the Web. As the recognized leader for the technical development of the World Wide Web, we are seeking an individual with both Web technology and project management experience, an excellent understanding of the Web industry, and enthusiasm for the mission and spirit of W3C.

Responsibilities

The individual will work within standard groups to edit specifications, develop change proposals, monitor progress, reach out to different stakeholders, produce tests, and to respond to clarification requests, bugs and issues.

Requirements

  • Bachelors Degree or higher
  • Background in computer science and software engineering;
  • An understanding of the Web industry and its market, practices, and product development cycles;
  • Familiarity with up-to-date Web technologies, such as HTML, CSS, and Scripting;
  • Experience with the development of open information technology standards is desired;
  • Experience with writing test cases for browser technologies is a plus;
  • Human relations skills and the ability to build consensus among disparate groups;
  • Strong writing skills required, with past experiences in editing technical specifications a plus;
  • Good written and spoken competency in the working language of the W3C, i.e., English, as well as in Chinese;
  • Ability to travel internationally is required
  • Knowledge and practical experience of other languages and cultures is a plus

Work starts January 1, 2017.

Position is based at the School of Computer Science & Engineering of Beihang University, No.37 Xueyuan Road, Haidian District, Beijing. There will be regular international travel including to W3C Host sites, and regular remote work with the Working Groups and the W3C Global staff.
