To date, the colors used on the Web in Cascading Style Sheets (CSS2) have been limited to the relatively narrow gamut of sRGB. Earlier attempts to add full color management to CSS and to Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) were met with implementer resistance, and thus the Web fell behind the capabilities taken for granted in native applications, in print, and in broadcast television and film. The widespread consumer deployment of laptops, tablets and phones whose screens had wider gamuts, similar to the DCI P3 gamut from digital cinema, finally sparked implementer interest. Chris will cover the wide color gamut capabilities of CSS Color 4, whose first draft was published in 2016, and converges existing standards from print and from broadcast TV, before going on to describe the new capabilities in CSS Color 5 and HDR.
