In this session, you will learn about new and in-progress resources for developing e-Accessibility professionals in a wide range of areas -- from training material to research reports to design guidance to evaluation resources. We will discuss current and future opportunities to be part of a community of web accessibility practitioners developing professional skills. - 2013-03-27 (27 MAR)Abstract:The Open Web Platform is expanding its reach and scope. More industries are looking to adopt HTML5, latest one being the automotive industry. More use cases are also being brought to the W3C and it recently created the System Applications Working Group to define a runtime environment for building Web applications with comparable capabilities to native applications and are in the process of creating a group adding speech recognition and synthesis to web contexts like HTML. From video conferencing to performance APIs, this presentation will give a general update on the latest technologies being standardized at the W3C.

Abstract:HTML5 adds support for video by introducing a dedicated element, the video tag, as well as at various methods to manipulate its playback. As such, it makes video a first-class citizen of the Web, completely integrated within HTML and its adjacent technologies, such as CSS or SVG, while enabling proper accessibility capabilities. This initial support is now being extended to accommodate more use cases, such as live streaming or video conferencing. Starting with the basics of HTML5 video, this presentation will look at the ongoing work happening in the video in the Web space including real time, captioning and protected content. - 2013-04-02 (2 APR)

Abstract:border-radius is humble. It will never show off. Everyone and their cat think they know it well, but it won’t stand up to defend itself. Instead, it will smirk quietly while everybody is busy paying attention to its more flashy siblings, confident in its own skin. border-radius might seem superficially simple, but it can be very powerful. However, its powers are reserved only for those who know how to unleash them. Under its superficial simplicity it hides some of the most complex algorithms in CSS. Intrigued? Come to this talk, and prepare to be surprised.

We are seeing the next round of those transformations occurring based on the Open Web Platform which is the current set of Web Standards defined by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). We will discuss how this platform is impacting all industries including Mobile, Web & TV and Digital Publishing. Although the boundaries of the platform continue to evolve, industry leaders speak nearly in unison about how HTML5 is the cornerstone for this platform. But the full strength of the platform relies on many more technologies that W3C and its partners are creating, including CSS, SVG, WOFF, the Semantic Web stack, XML, and a variety of APIs.

Abstract:The majority of corporate websites are still not designed to work well on mobile devices. Some companies provide native apps, but these are expensive to develop. The problem is getting worse with new platforms such as tablets, TVs and cars. This talk presents work on an open source browser-based collaborative design assistant that simplifies the development of responsive web applications that work effectively on different platforms. This is based upon an expert system that dynamically updates the user interface design to reflect the developer’s decisions and ensure consistency across platforms. This is implemented in terms of constraint propagation and search through the design space. An additional benefit is the ease of providing accessible user interfaces in conjunction with assistive technologies. - 2013-05-23 (23 MAY)

What technical approaches are emerging as best practices? Can Linked Data play nicely with other formats? These are the broad questions that were addressed in a workshop jointly organized by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), the Open Data Institute and the Open Knowledge Foundation, hosted by Google right in the heart of London’s Tech City of Shoreditch in April. Phil Archer will present a summary of the topics discussed and how it is likely to affect future standards work at W3C.

Abstract:Enthusiasm and political support for open data is based on three pillars: that it will increase transparency, improve efficiency and stimulate innovation. Meeting these promises has had several spectacular successes but there remains a lot of work to do before data becomes as much a part of the public infrastructure as, say, transport or leisure facilities. W3C's 'go to person' for open data and eGov in Europe assesses the road ahead, looking for pitfalls suggesting routes around some of the obstacles.
