Planning for TPAC discussion
Hi all,
We will discuss this CG and the emerging W3C Open Source Program at a TPAC breakout session on 28 October. Please expect more activity in the group after TPAC. Thanks!
Ian
In September 2026, W3C announced a first pilot project for a new Open Source Program.
The mission of the W3C Open Source Program Community Group is to manage the next phase of growth of a W3C Open Source Program. This Community Group will study what is needed to create a scalable W3C Open Source Program, focusing on program governance, operations, and liaisons, and developing a clear project lifecycle description.
The group has a goal for W3C to launch a full Open Source Program by mid-2028, after which the expectation is that this Community Group would be replaced by a governing body (and therefore archived).
This group will not publish Specifications.
Note: Community Groups are proposed and run by the community. Although W3C hosts these conversations, the groups do not necessarily represent the views of the W3C Membership or staff.
Chairs, when logged in, may publish draft and final reports. Please see report requirements.

The W3C Open Source Program Community Group has been launched:
In September 2026, W3C announced a first pilot project for a new Open Source Program.
The mission of the W3C Open Source Program Community Group is to manage the next phase of growth of a W3C Open Source Program. This Community Group will study what is needed to create a scalable W3C Open Source Program, focusing on program governance, operations, and liaisons, and developing a clear project lifecycle description.
The group has a goal for W3C to launch a full Open Source Program by mid-2028, after which the expectation is that this Community Group would be replaced by a governing body (and therefore archived).
This group will not publish Specifications.
In order to join the group, you will need a W3C account. Please note, however, that W3C Membership is not required to join a Community Group.
This is a community initiative. This group was originally proposed on 2026-10-19 by Ian Jacobs. The following people supported its creation: Ian Jacobs, Daniel Appelquist, François Daoust, Adam Sobieski and Olvis Enrique Gil Ríos. W3C’s hosting of this group does not imply endorsement of the activities.
The group must now choose a chair. Read more about how to get started in a new group and good practice for running a group.
We invite you to share news of this new group on social media and other channels.
If you believe that there is an issue with this group that requires the attention of the W3C staff, please email us at site-comments@w3.org
Thank you,
W3C Community Development Team
