Call for Participation in Web Content Browser for AI Agents Community Group

The Web Content Browser for AI Agents Community Group has been launched:

AI agents increasingly need to read and interact with web pages. The current approach – sending raw HTML or DOM snapshots to language models – is wasteful and lossy. This Community Group will develop a JSON format to represent web page content in a form optimized for consumption by AI agents and language models. One goal is to reduce token costs (through compression) while preserving semantic meaning and interactivity.

Group deliverables are expected to be a specification, schema, conformance test suite, and integration guide. The SOM Spec v1.0 is intended to serve as a starting point for discussion within the group, but is not intended to constrain the group’s discussions or decisions about future deliverables.

This group will publish Specifications.

In order to join the group, you will need a W3C account. Please note, however, that W3C Membership is not required to join a Community Group.

This is a community initiative. This group was originally proposed on 2026-03-23 by David Hurley. The following people supported its creation: David Hurley, Alan Hartless, Daniel Bradley, Jan Linhart and Daniel Tubbs. W3C’s hosting of this group does not imply endorsement of the activities.

The group must now choose a chair. Read more about how to get started in a new group and good practice for running a group.

We invite you to share news of this new group on social media and other channels.

If you believe that there is an issue with this group that requires the attention of the W3C staff, please email us at site-comments@w3.org

Thank you,
W3C Community Development Team
