Open Cloud Mesh (OCM) is a server federation protocol used to notify a Receiving Party that they have been granted access to some Resource. A core use case of OCM is when a user (e.g., Alice on System A) wishes to share a resource (e.g., a file) with another user (e.g., Bob on System B) without transferring the resource itself or requiring Bob to log in to System A.
This Community Group hosted the OCM collaboration and protocol specification effort, which is being developed by the CS3 Community.
In July 2025, work in this group was transferred to the IETF with the objective to initiate their Standardization Process. OCM discussions now take place on an IETF Mailing list with the expectation to form a Working Group.

conversations, the groups do not necessarily represent the views of the W3C Membership or staff.
We are happy to share that we completed a successful dispatch for OCM at the IETF 123 Dispatch session held this week.
As a result, we have received an IETF mailing list, ocm@ietf.org, and we will now start preparing the ground for a Working Group forming BoF (Birds of a Feather session) at an upcoming IETF meeting, with the final goal of publishing OCM as an IETF RFC.
The workshop will feature presentations and discussions about the current implementations of the OCM standard. Developers and technical staff interested in federated sharing and its integration in sync&share solutions are most welcome to participate.
This is a community initiative. This group was originally proposed on 2023-09-21 by Michiel de Jong. The following people supported its creation: Michiel de Jong, Rachel Yager, Giuseppe Lo Presti, Mahdi Baghbani, Gianmaria Del Monte. W3C’s hosting of this group does not imply endorsement of the activities.
