Chairs: Michael Koster, Ege Korkan
Organizational (15 mins)
- Scribe: Pick a scribe from the list above
- Agenda Review
- Update: Agendas are ready on Thursday (1 week in advance) (Not this week, sorry for oversight)
- Draft minutes of last week: https://www.w3.org/2023/12/13-wot-td-minutes.html (reviewed by Ege )
- Cancellations: 27th of Dec and 3rd of Jan are cancelled. W3C Calendar updated.
- New TD Call Slot:
- Please remove the old entries from your calendars.
- Wednesday 10 am EST (see https://www.w3.org/events/meetings/d36cf33e-0359-45f8-be6c-5c93a9ef3cb1/20240110T100000/)

- TD Coordination slot: Wednesday 7 am EST, 1 pm CET) (Only FYI, only for Ege, Koster and Kaz)
- Start of the new slot(s): Second week of January.
- Splitting of the topics: We fix the topic that starts the meeting. Wednesdays we start with TD.next, Thursday with Specific Bindings. This method can be revised when we learn more about how we work.
- Wiki Organization: Archiving everything from 2023 and older. Never done so far here.
- Regrets: Mahda
WoT Resources (10 mins)
- (skipping since Mahda is not available) TM.html and .svg: https://github.com/w3c/wot-thing-description/pull/1935
- Versioning
- What do we mean by versioning?
- Pointing to the most recent version but also older versions should be available
- Semver with Major, Minor, Patch at semver.org
- For TD.next, do we want to publish resources with each publication (WD, CR, PR etc) or not?
- Which changes are bugfixes, new features (TD 2.0 keywords)
- JSON Schemas
- Patch: English typos etc. Minor: Relaxing a constraint (longer strings, more oneof) so that more TDs can pass the schema. Major: Adding or restricting constraints
- JSON-LD Context
- Ontology files
- TTL
- HTML
- JSON Schemas
- How much time to invest in maintaining 1.1 resources?
- Maintaining multiple files or not
- xxx.v1.1.0.ttl xxx.v1.1.1.ttl
- Decision so far: Do not dig into 1.1 versioning until we have the need.
- TM resources (tm.ttl and tm.html) will not be versioned for the first changes since HTML doesn't exist and TTL is not usable.
- What do we mean by versioning?
Specific Binding Templates (5 mins)
- Merged Editorial PRs: https://github.com/w3c/wot-binding-templates/pulls?q=is%3Apr+is%3Aclosed+label%3AEditorial+sort%3Aupdated-desc
- Modbus:
- (merged) Intro improvement PR: https://github.com/w3c/wot-binding-templates/pull/329
TD (1h30)
- Repo snapshot for REC 1.1 https://github.com/w3c/wot-thing-description/releases/tag/REC1.1

- IANA Registries PR: https://github.com/w3c/wot/pull/1161
- Awaiting input from Michael Koster
- Use Case Analysis and Requirement Extraction
- We have to look at the other work listed below:
- Security "Dimensions": https://github.com/w3c/wot-usecases/blob/main/USE-CASES/security-categories.csv where the columns are filled over time per individual use case analysis
- Discovery Requirements with their associated Use Cases: https://w3c.github.io/wot-usecases/#discovery . This assumes that there is a list of requirements for Discovery
- Coverage Table: https://github.com/w3c/wot-usecases/blob/main/USE-CASES/coverage.csv This has a small requirement extracted from all use cases for TD and Binding.
- Use Cases should be iterated to extract the information we need.
- Relates to https://github.com/w3c/wot-usecases/issues/192 but also mentioned by JR.
- New use cases should at least have that information if we cannot iterate through use cases. Or we filter out current use cases if they cannot fulfill the template requirements.
- Pick Use Cases that are of importance
- CA: Extracting User Stories from Use Cases. What the user (developer) wants to do with WoT (TDs), are they able to do it (if they are submitting the US, they are not able to).
- We have to look at the other work listed below:
- Backtracking a simple new addition in TD 1.1: synchronous word in actions
- Use Case: Interacting with two robots that behave slightly differently (one replying rightaway and moving, other moving and then replying)
- Requirement: A keyword should indicate this behavior
- Feature: "synchronous" keyword with boolean type

TD Next (1h15)
- Reorganization of Work Items
- Project Management: How do we organize the work? Some thoughts from Ege Korkan are below:
- Ideally, we should discuss our requirements and what people want to see. Mandating a mechanism that the moderators like but is disliked by everyone else should be avoided.
- The goal is to make it more systematic than "copy-pasting the agenda, look into issues and PRs"
- The process for generating features from use cases should be taken into account
- We can use a tool like GitHub Projects. A premature example is available at https://github.com/orgs/w3c/projects/31
- Does anyone else have experience or suggestions on methods to try?
- Opinions from last week
- MN: Only assigning an issue is not enough, because the number can increase and we can lose oversight/prioritization.
- CA: Assigning should happen when you know that person can do it in 1-2 weeks.
- JR: Splitting issues definitely helps. -> We should limit the workload of an issue in the beginning or use checkboxes per small item and open a "spinoff" issue.
- We can make sure to limit the load of a person per 1-2 week timeframe and thus prioritize certain issues/topics.
- KA: We should think of what we have been doing so far.
- Ege will document the process we have been "naturally" doing.
- Proposal:
- An MVP is one place to look at the list of "work" to do in a short period.
- A prioritization should happen and should be aligned with use cases and requirements, i.e. how do we choose the small list of work to do
- We should analyze https://github.com/w3c/strategy/projects/2 and https://github.com/orgs/w3c/projects/13, create issue templates for necessary items, define the procedure in a written form.

Planning for new charter workstreams (45 mins)
- Planning PR: https://github.com/w3c/wot/pull/1106 (reflects the items below)
- GH Projects Quick Look: https://github.com/orgs/w3c/projects/31
- Classification Proposal:
- For new features (keywords or behavior), a use case (or user story) should exist in the first place.
- Changes that improve readability, the usability of the specification OR development, spec generation, bug fix, and testing of the specification do not need use cases
- What to do with the existing issues and PRs that are postponed?
- Option 1: If there are no use cases identified, they can be closed after some time.
- What about the work items in the charter or details that are not linked to use cases?
- What to do with the existing issues and PRs that are postponed?
- Topics that have multiple dependencies on them should be prioritized
- Such categories can be reflected with labels and different views in the GitHub project management panel
- Big Tasks List Proposal:
- Restructure TD document while keeping the current content, e.g. grouping of normative requirements, common definitions section (usability improvements for not needing to "jump around" while reading)
- ThingModel integration into TD document
- Protocol Binding integration into TD document
- Binding Mechanisms for interaction data in the message body or URI, protocol metadata in payload, etc.
- Relates to presentation by Luca
- Design registry and documentation requirements for binding specifications
- Security refactor
- Spec Generation
- Any other items here from the group?
- TD Testing (each TF responsible for its own testing)

Planning for new charter workstreams (45 mins)

Big Architectural and Design Topics for the Next Charter (45 mins)
- Last week's Presentation from Michael Koster: https://github.com/w3c/wot/blob/main/PRESENTATIONS/2023-31-05-tdnext.pdf
- Where to document such big discussions and allow asynchronous comments?
- Create an issue, let people comment. Then create a summary before the charter planning sessions. The summary should highlight the parts where the group needs to reach a resolution. E.g. the exact format of the bindings (registry or not).
- Where to document such big discussions and allow asynchronous comments?
- Continuing on the discussion of last week

- Explaining the share of moderation between Ege Korkan and Michael Koster
- This is the initial ideas, we are open to feedback
- Koster: Basic architectural design, document structure, etc. Project management (keep people informed on the process)
- Ege: concrete description based on the design (constructing the statements for normative/informative style for implementability and testability), call moderation
- Together: Work on how to improve the spec collaboratively, e.g., schedule of the deliverables, and keeping up with the deadlines.
- We join the calls together unless there is a conflict.
- Responsibility is not split, it is shared. If someone asks a question, both should be able to answer it.
- Feedback:
- Cris: Testability should be assured
- Kaz and Koster: TD still does the governance of testing, we are responsible. To be further discussed and the relationship to testing TF clarified.
