WAI Site Top Tasks

From Education & Outreach

Notes

See background in 28 Sept e-mail.

EOWG folks - please edit these Tasks at will. :-)

Some of the key resources we've added over the last few years that are not adequately covered in the old Task list:

Top Task Candidates

  • I need an overview of Web accessibility for [a report/an article/a presentation/my own curiosity].
  • I need to understand the difference between WCAG 2.0 Level A, AA, AAA.
  • Where can I find information and checklists to help me get started as a new [web site manager]?
  • Where can I find information and checklists to help me get started as a new [developer]?
    • Can these two as well as the question below about checklists be combined into one task? Although the items on each checklist vary they are still based on the same standards. By separating them out we run the risk of excluding some of these tasks from the top 5 just because a person with that specific role may not have answered the survey. Just like the filter for our Quick Ref, which SC applies to which role can vary - and overlap - depending on how each individual defines her role. If we're going to provide a checklist, we provide a checklist. On the content end we can provide the ability to filter/separate them based on different needs but these shouldn't be treated as separate tasks or needs.
  • I am creating [data tables, forms, carousels, etc.] and want to know how to make them accessible.
  • We hired a third-party vendor to build our new Web site., The contract specifies that the site has to meet WCAG 2.0 Level AA. How can we measure conformance with our contract?
  • How do I perform human or manual evaluations of web pages and other software?
  • Where do I find a list of [requirements/success criteria] on web accessibility and how do I fix any problems on my web site?
  • What do I need to know as a beginning developer to make my front-end web-based application accessible?
  • Where can I find information on how people with disabilities access and use web pages?
  • Where can I find information to convince others that making web pages accessible is the right thing to do?
  • Where can I find out about Web accessibility laws in different countries around the world.
  • Does WAI provide or recommend a web accessibility evaluation tool? Where can I find a checklist of what to look for and a comparison of these tools?
  • What are the most common accessibility problems on websites, and how do I fix them?
  • I'm looking for information on mobile accessibility. (Removed "guidelines" and added "information on." Susan)
  • What tools are available for checking accessibility of web pages and applications, including mobile accessibility? (Would like to remove "including mobile accessibility." I don't think these tasks should call out mobile unless we do so as well on every other task here that would also apply to mobile work. Susan)
    • What tools are available for unit-testing / page testing / site testing for accessibility?
  • I want a succinct solution for my problem with optional follow-up reading. I don’t know my level of experience. I don’t know where to search. Quick start tips? Tutorials?
  • I am a Website designer (I do not write code), so how do I design to meet WCAG 2.0 Level AA criteria? (Do we need to specify AA in this task? Brent)
  • I have a very large scale web application or website, how do I approach testing and remediation to meet WCAG 2.0 Level AA? (I understand the use of AA a little more here, but again, do we need to specify AA in this task? Brent)
  • How can I participate in WAI?
    • I think this is really important, but maybe more as "how can I contribute to the work of WAI". Many people are unaware that they can review, provide feedback and suggestions, and even actively participate in WGs - shadi
    • Agree with Shadi's comment (Brent)

I reviewed the top tasks and they look good to me. I don't have anything to add. - Laura

    • Also related is the aspect of "Translations" ... "[how] can I translate WAI resources?" - shadi
    • In general I recommend we look closely at our use of "web site," "applications," and "software." If some of these tasks relate to a user looking for standards that aren't WCAG, then let's make that clear. As is, a user unfamiliar with accessibility might think the terms are being used interchangeably. - Susan (Good point Susan, I agree - Brent)
