Videos Tutorial

Eric: The Tutorial Outline: Captions approach is rather narrow, I think it would be useful to not concentrate just on captions but on all aspects of making media accessible, with a focus on Video.

Part of New Tutorials work

Approach

  • An overview of what to do to make video accessible on the web, focusing on captions but also mentioning transcripts, and audio description of video; and with brief orientation to W3C technologies, and to manual vs automated captions vs automated-assist, etc.

Status

  • This is a draft outline, subject to change, currently getting early review by EOWG. Input welcome.

Videos Tutorial Outline

Video Concepts

Video in HTML5

General overview on the video element, and the available accessibility options.

Transcripts

  • What are Transcripts?
  • What formats can be used? (Brief)
  • How to create effective captions?
  • How to show a clear relationship to the video?

Captions

  • What are Captions?
  • What formats can be used? (Brief)
  • How to create effective captions?
  • How to embed captions in your video?

Video Description

  • What is Video Descriptions?
  • What formats can be used? (Brief)
  • How to create effective descriptions?
  • How to embed descriptions in your website?

Decision Tree

  • What type of assistive support do I need to give when I have a video that has only feature X? For example (probably a bad one), a video without speech or sounds does not need a transcript, but would benefit from a description…

Types of accessibility support for media (conceptual overview)

Eric: I think this is much too broad for a tutorial.

  • Captions, transcripts, video description
    • details on basic functions and requirements
  • Types of requirements there may be
    • transcript vs synchronized captions vs closed described video, etc
    • when required for pre-recorded audio, vs
    • when required for live-streaming, etc
    • Eric: We don’t specify that in other tutorials, but it might be handy to use it on a tips page in this case.
    • may depend on country, jurisdiction, times available, etc
    • Eric: That’s probably a given.
  • Range of quality people may expect in a given context
    • entertainment, education, work-place, etc.
    • auto-generated rough, manual, auto-assisted
    • when quality may matter a lot
    • Eric: Also for me more something for a tips and tricks page.
  • Overview of captioning options
    • Brief discussion of manual vs automated captions
    • Eric: This could be on the captions page. However, I think we can cut the discussion to “There are automated captioning services available. If they don’t represent the content of the video properly and accurately, they are not helpful and need to be manually edited.”
  • Choice of captioning technologies
    • Description of ranges of technologies

Captions Concepts and Development Examples Outline

  • Captioning Concepts
    • Captioning purpose
      • Captions and subtitles
    • Captions technical resources
  • Why this is Important
    • Requirements for captioning
    • Consequences of missing captions
    • Benefits of captions
  • Related resources
    • Caption related policy requirements
    • Recent developments in caption generation
    • Eric: I think we should not add time-sensitive content to the tutorials, if we can.
    • Types of tools for captioning
    • Eric: Would that link to the tools list?

Sample caption generation

  • Basics of manual captions
  • Basics of automated captions
  • Basics of auto-assisted captions
  • Eric: This page sounds very abstract. I think we should have a captions page that says “And here are three ways to generate captions, and this are advantages and disadvantages of each:”

ATAG 2.0 support for captions

  • Purpose of ATAG 2.0
    • In what ways can ATAG 2.0 support caption generation
    • Basic expectations for captioning support
    • Eric: I’m unsure if we really want to open the ATAG 2.0 can of worms here.

Internationalization and captions

  • Captions and Subtitles
    • Captions vs Subtitles
    • Captions with Subtitles
    • Current limitations of track element

Eric: Maybe tips page? I don’t feel that this is a big problem, but I have a limited view here. Also, can we point to r12a’s resources?

Decision tree: selecting type of captions and development tools

Eric: I don’t feel that this content is suitable for a decision tree, also this decision tree has decisions about two different things in it.

  • Ease of development
  • Meeting your quality objectives
  • Etc

Notes and Issues

  • Need to trim scope
  • Need to link to other related resources
  • Github issues

Change log

  • Eric to propose change to this tutorial to “videos”. Focusing scope.
  • Added approach, status, notes, change log
  • Re-arranged and expanded content
