New Accessibility Tutorials Requirements Analysis

From Education & Outreach

Part of WCAG TA Project Work

Purpose, goal

Provide further explanation of and implementation support for WCAG 2.0, primarily in the form of tutorials. Develop four additional tutorials for WCAG 2.0; one as an overview tutorial for how to use WCAG 2.0 for mobile accessibility; the other three on topics below.

Audiences, use cases

  • Mobile web and app developers can get a basic orientation to the applicability of WCAG 2.0 for mobile accessibility. (More detail on objectives and approach
  • ARIA developers can get a conceptual introduction to ARIA, and an intro to the ARIA Authoring Practices resource, with explanation and examples of how to use WCAG 2.0 and ARIA for sliders and/or date-pickers.
  • Content developers can get a basic orientation, explanation and examples of how to develop captions that conform to WCAG 2.0, using the latest W3C technologies and a variety of captioning approaches.

Objectives, tasks

Draft approach and outline for mobile accessibility tutorial

  • This would be an overview tutorial, showing areas of similarity across key topics, and similarities/differences in coding approach for an accessible website vs an accessible app
  • Obtain EOWG input into draft approach and outline, and input from Mobile Accessibility Task Force Review
  • Develop rough draft based on outline

Draft approach and outline for ARIA 1.1 authoring practices material on sliders as a tutorial

  • Approach: this would be a conceptual overview to ARIA with an emphasis on benefits to interoperability of accurate coding, and an introduction to applying those with the slider examples from Authoring Practices.
  • Update conceptual section of outline based on existing material from ARIA authoring practices

Draft approach and outline for accessible date-picker tutorial

  • Outline content, tips
  • Draft new content
  • Develop accessible date-picker examples
  • Revise according to feedback

Draft approach and outline for accessible captions tutorial

  • Outline content, tips
  • Add decision tree for caption formats
  • Draft content
  • Incorporate feedback from EOWG review

Next steps

  1. EOWG review requirements
  2. Complete mobile accessibility outline and draft content
  3. Outline three in-depth tutorials

Notes, issues

  • Previous tab-panel topic was dropped because of a similar resource in the field; replaced with captions topic.
  • Slider section of ARIA 1.1 Authoring Practices already has tutorial-like content, but ARIA TF may be interested in a gateway tutorial that would bring people over into the Authoring Practices suite, and using at least one example (probably sliders) to walk through how to develop with ARIA.
