Apple - accessible - ROI

Apple CEO Tim Cook... defended Apple’s right to make business decisions that don’t always directly benefit the bottom line. “When we work on making our devices accessible by the blind, I don’t consider the bloody ROI,” Cook said... — Time quoting from macobserver

Thoughts on adding that to Social Factors in Developing a Web Accessibility Business Case for Your Organization?

  • yes! well, probably not - My first reaction is: YES! 'cause it's a cool quote from Apple. But then I think we might be "opening a can of worms" by adding such a quote -- e.g., then we should add other relevant quotes, then we need to to define criteria for including quotes, etc... {name 00-Mon-2014}
  • nup - Was impressed when I first read this in the press - still am. But as someone else (Shawn?) said we are then somewhat onliged to inlcude other such quotes and how do we qualify them. {Andrew, 10-April-2014}

Link to Gartner report?

EOWG thoughts:

  • issue with press release — I am uncomfortable with "situational disabilities", which is used in the Gartner press release. As a tangential issue, I would like EOWG's perspectives on this — please add your thoughts to the separate wiki page: Situational terminology Thanks! {Shawn}
  • worth including - resources or financial section — While we don't generally like the term 'situational disabilities' (and should not use it ourselves), this alone doesn't make it a bad resource in my opinion. {Andrew, 2014.04.10}

Changelog 2012-September

For Mobile & Accessibility Overlap

We need to better highlight the overlap between mobile & accessibility, and the resources Web Content Accessibility and Mobile Web: Making a Web Site Accessible Both for People with Disabilities and for Mobile Devices and Shared Web Experiences: Barriers Common to Mobile Device Users and People with Disabilities

NOTE: minor changes to below based on EOWG Minutes 7 Sept - e.g., mobile phone -> mobile device in most places

Proposal for what to put where:

  1. Location: Overview, Factors listing
    Suggestion: add mobile to first bullet: "...and benefits to people without disabilities, including people using mobile phones, older people,..."
    Location: Overview page, "Factors in a Business Case for Web Accessibility" section, 3rd bullet: "Financial Factors addresses the financial benefits of increased website use, for example, from engine optimization (SEO); direct cost savings; considerations for initial costs and on-going costs; and ways to decrease costs."
    Suggestion: add to the end: ", including developing for accessibility and mobile together" {Shawn}
  2. Location: Social Factors page in "Web Accessibility is a Social Issue" section - after "Overlap with Digital Divide Issues" and before "Overlap with Older Users' Needs"
    Suggestion: New section Overlap with Mobile Access that says: "In some parts of the world, most people use the Web only through a mobile phone, because they do not have access to a desktop or laptop. The overlap between mobile design/development and accessibility is introduced in Web Content Accessibility and Mobile Web: Making a Web Site Accessible Both for People with Disabilities and for Mobile Devices." {Shawn}
  3. Location: Social Factors page at end of "Web Accessibility Benefits People With and Without Disabilities" section where we list the relevant WCAG success criteria for each
    Suggestion: New section Access for Mobile Phone Users that says: "For examples of how accessibility benefits mobile phone users, along with links to WCAG success criteria, see Shared Web Experiences: Barriers Common to Mobile Device Users and People with Disabilities." {Shawn}
    testing link text: "For examples of how accessibility benefits mobile phone users, along with links to WCAG success criteria, see Shared Web Experiences: Barriers Common to Mobile Device Users and People with Disabilities."
  4. Location: Technical Factors page, "Enable Content on Different Configurations" section
    Suggestion: Add to the end of section the sentence: "For a more detailed list of how accessibility overlaps mobile design/development, along with links to WCAG success criteria, see Shared Web Experiences: Barriers Common to Mobile Device Users and People with Disabilities." {shawn}
  5. Location: Financial Factors page under Increases potential use in more situations section
    Suggestion: After the sentence with a link to "Enable Content....", add the sentences which Shawn has suggested above (that Shawn since changed to avoid repetition:). {Vicki}
    Location: Financial Factors page, under "Increases potential use in more situations" section
    Suggestion: Add to the last paragraph the phrase after the comma: "The Enable Content on Different Configurations section of Technical Factors describes how accessibility techniques help web pages work with different configurations, especially on mobile phones." {shawn}
  6. Location: Financial Factors page, under "Increases potential use by more people" section
    Suggestion: Add people using mobile phones in first sentence: "Accessible sites can be used by more people - including people with disabilities, people using mobile phones, older people, people with low literacy..." {shawn}
  7. Location: Financial Factors page, under "Decreasing Costs" section
    Suggestion: Add to the end: "Addressing accessibility and mobile together
    Designers and developers can more efficiently develop websites (including applications) that work well by people using mobile devices and by people with disabilities, when they understand the significant overlap between the two and design for both together. The overlap between the barriers and solutions is introduced in Web Content Accessibility and Mobile Web." {shawn & andrew}
  8. Location: Resources page
    Suggestion: Add section near bottom: Promoting Accessibility - Tips, guidance, and case studies are available from the WAI-Engage wiki page on Promoting web accessibility. {shawn}
