Meeting minutes

<Ralph> previous 9 July

Publishing@W3C Public Seminar next Tuesday

<tzviya> https://www.w3.org/2021/09/publishing-seminar/

tzviya: I hope you all saw the invitation to this open meeting
… thanks to those who recorded videos
… no thanks to those who didn't
… let's come up with some questions in advance
… in case the audience is quiet
… I will start by introducing people and giving a 3-min intro
… then open the floor to questions
… have people watched the videos yet?
… there's a lot on a11y
… audiobooks
… CG
… any thoughts on potential questions?

<Ralph> Join us for Publishing@W3C Open Discussion, 14 September, 2021

Ralph: thanks to Tzviya and everyone who provided content and advice
… Karen has been meeting with potential members
… in every one of those meetings, their top interest is a11y
… what is wcag 2.2? what is wcag 3? what is epub a11y doing?
… they nod and smile about improvements to EPUB spec
… but a11y is #1
… we're doing a lot on a11y, but there are probably other issues
… what more do we need to do to advance digital publishing?

mateus: we've had trouble with engagement
… lots of change in the industry
… people aren't energized about work generally
… could we start telegraphing more exciting new work we are planning for the future
… what's next?
… for EPUB? For a11y?
… how our work depends on community participation
… how people can participate with no tech background

wendyreid: we should talk about task forces
… the WG is boring, talking about obscure issues
… but interesting work is happening in the task force
… locaters, FXL a11y, a11y in general
… what else is going on?
… some might be in a future epub

tzviya: we have a 10/27 call for what happens after EPUB 3.3
… we could give people a chance to summarize
… Mateus could talk about the CG and new ideas
… Wendy could talk about the WG

<Zakim> tzviya, you wanted to talk about call on Oct 27

George: responding to Mateus
… I'm shocked that we have still pictures in books where a short video would be much more constructive
… like the battle of gettysburg
… we have to resolve these kinds of issues
… otherwise we're viewed as being stodgy

mateus: ideas for the future...
… I'm on board with energizing folks
… one challenge is that, even if we get people excited
… we can't accomplish anyone without participation
… when people see that we're not acting on ideas, they will stop participating
… if we're sharing ideas, we need an action plan
… otherwise we'll alienate the community

liisamk: re: George
… people did books with embedded video
… didn't have much support from reading systems
… didn't have a way to use only one file
… problem with poster frames
… so people just don't do it
… we need engagement for implementation
… or some best practices for people to buy into

tzviya: because of limitations of reading systems we can't deliver the youtube experience
… the immersive experience doesn't work
… user experience is not good in epub for these things
… if we can get over that hurdle it will be better
… but right now people will use the web for that

<mateus> +1

tzviya: hopefully y'all will be there on September 14

liisamk: should we send questions to this mailing list?

tzviya: yes, please.
… I'll call on people to ask their own questions.

planning for TPAC

tzviya: we've talked about various sessions
… what are the EPUB sessions?
… EPUB is hosting our own session
… meeting with APA

<tzviya> https://www.w3.org/wiki/TPAC/2021/GroupMeetings

ivan: we don't know because PING will have a call next week with us
… that may end up as joint meeting at TPAC
… from our POV we don't need a meeting with i18n
… same for CSS, no open issues
… APA will have a meeting with EPUB

avneeshsingh: two hours on 28th with APA
… topic: horizontal review, then discussion of parallel work with css and other groups
… and spoken pronunciation
… there's a task force under APA
… how pronunciation can help in publishing
… most things are not epub-specific
… meeting on Oct 25 Monday, objective is brainstorming for a11y metadata values used by various groups
… should we use process 2021 registries?

tzviya: will the BG meet?

liisamk: we were thinking about a conference day
… but given the schedule we might just have our regular meeting during TPAC and then do conference day the next month

tzviya: week of 25th is for joint meetings

tzviya: what's the CG planning?

mateus: we'll have a regular meeting, talking about road-mapping our priorities
… scheduling the work we want to do

tzviya: CG and WG chairs should meet

mateus: yeah, let's strategize together

tzviya: maybe before the call on the 27th

mateus: great

tzviya: ralph, you asked about encouraging broader participation
… Ralph might not be here
… are there sessions that would be good for potential members to observe
… probably not registries ;)

liisamk: does it make sense to open our BG meeting the week before to any potential new members
… we are going to talk about business needs of epub next

tzviya: which day?

liisamk: maybe it should be 19th?

tzviya: OK
… is the epub.next call public?

wendyreid: I think so?

tzviya: we could just invite them?

liisamk: we're looking for an asia BG call next week
… so we can follow up on videos

tzviya: karen would like to know about sessions that might be good for potential members

tzviya: anything else?

George: is there was a spot where we can see the calendar for that week?

<tzviya> https://www.w3.org/wiki/TPAC/2021/GroupMeetings

tzviya: there's a link but it might not be accurate yet
… it's up to the chairs to fill out

<tzviya> https://www.w3.org/2021/10/TPAC/

tzviya: there are also breakout sessions at TPAC

<tzviya> https://www.w3.org/wiki/TPAC/2021/SessionIdeas

tzviya: (describing sessions)
… and you can propose a session
… anything else?

(crickets)
… thanks everyone!
