RESOLVED Minutes of 25 October accepted
Makx Dekkers' introduction -> http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/public-gld-wg/2012Nov/0003.html
Relevant blog posts at http://storify.com/w3cteam/tpac2012-see-sketch-and-fun, http://3roundstones.com/2012/11/08/tpac-2012-liberte-and-the-open-web-platform/ and http://3roundstones.com/2012/11/08/tpac-2012-4-days-of-open-web-standards-nouvelle-cuisine/
bhyland: It was a great
event
... I posted an exec summary
http://3roundstones.com/2012/11/08/tpac-2012-liberte-and-the-open-web-platform/
... great event in a terrific location
<cygri> agipap, can you go to http://www.w3.org/2011/gld/track/users and enter your nickname? makes it easier for the sribe, otherwise they have to clean up the minutes manually each time
<agipap> of course
bhyland: great to see how many
people with various impairments were able to fully participate
and move around
... I got there a day early thanks to Sandy (boy that was a
strong wind) but it meant I was able to get to the developers'
event
<bhyland> Developers Meetup in Lyon, agenda: http://www.w3.org/2012/10/TPAC/meetup-Lyon.html
bhyland: Majority of people were
on the floor as the room was so full. So many people enagaged
in watching saeries of quick demos
... powered through loads of demos. Most inspiring was
standards compliant Galaxy operating System
... I think it's Mozilla who have developed this very
impressive OS for mobile devices
... please let knkw know if you can't get to any of those pages
etc.
... then day by day blog is at
http://3roundstones.com/2012/11/08/tpac-2012-4-days-of-open-web-standards-nouvelle-cuisine/
... I stopped by the RDF WG that cygri is in. Impressed by the
meeting. Shows the importance of the charter/WG process
etc.
<agipap> nickname fixed
bhyland: I popped into Web ID
group
... that had more people than the RDF WG and had more of a
start up feel
... if you're not familiar with Community Groups then make
yourself so. http://www.w3.org/community/
sandro: CGs can be started by any
5 people (member or not)
... if it works well then it can grow into becoming a WG
... Business Groups cost money to join and are for vertical
industries
bhyland: More than 100 CGs have spring up since Aug 2011 with over 1900 participants. Lots from members but majority are not
sandro: I'm not sure of their
level of activity
... Some I suspect are inactive, others, like the one you saw
at TPAC, are very active
... A great deashboard feature would be the number of action
items that have been closed
bhyland: Riffs on the general
status and munificence of W3C
... Marilyn got me into a group to discuss perceived benefits
of membership
... Very professional marketing strategy.
... I found myself sitting next to major marketing and software
companies. They like W3C, the brains trust etc.
... Lots of W3C staff in the Gov Linked Data session I
ran
... lots of folk from governments from around the world in that
session
... there are details in the blog, especially the themes that
emerged
<bhyland> Emphasize flexibility & agility. Data interoperability is 20% technology and 80% about organization dynamics — politics and emotions (credit: Bart)
<bhyland> Common problem is overwhelming government officials with tech speak. Consider having a template from which internal champions can pull language:
<bhyland> • Financial benefits
<bhyland> • Social responsibility benefits
<bhyland> • Legal & regulatory benefits
<bhyland> • Technical benefits
bhyland: Communication of the value proposition to government departments was highlighted by Judy Brewer who offered template wording that can be used
<bhyland> From Brazilian university community
Giancarlo: worked on conceptual modelling, ontology development, recent work on gov applications
<jpalmeida> Giancarlo Guizzardi is my colleague at the Federal University of Espírito Santo, Brazil
<jpalmeida> we're with the Ontology and Conceptual Modelling Research Group
<bhyland> I concluded my TPAC meetings with an enjoyable meeting with Secretary Delfino Natal de Souza of the Ministry of Planning and two Brazil office staff who participate in the W3C Government Linked Data Working Group.
<jpalmeida> yes
cygri: I agree with what you've
been saying. It was my first TPAC too. Very interesting
event
... For anyone that spends time on W3C stuff it's highly
recommended. You see how other groups are working and you get
to meet real people behind the mailing list
... Good to see how the really big groups (CSS, HTML) handle
their processes
bhyland: HTML5 WG has 200+ people
signed up with 75 active - that's a lot...
... We have a great WG here in GLD, we should be proud
... The RDF WG was being very methodical cf. other less
focussed groups
PhilA2: Notes that HTML chairs are more or less Full Time on that job and we have extra paid editors to support them
<bhyland> 99% chance that next TPAC will be in China in Nov 2013
bhyland: I left with a heightened sense of importance of W3C as a standards body. Grounded, well established etc.
PhilA2: Wants to shout the name Alexandra Lavirotte who is the primary person to whom congrats are due for the success of TPAC
<bhyland> UK Gov't Linked Data WG was held on 5-Nov-2012 was http://data.gov.uk/linked-data/UKGovLD
<bhyland> Backed by members of staff of local ministry, they provided the venue & support for the event.
<bhyland> Participants were both public & private sector people.
<bhyland> Per PhilA2, they discussed … vocabularies, best practices. About 40-50 people in the room. About 20 are likely to be active and the usual suspects hopefully will continue to do the heavy lifting … but hope more will join/support their efforts!
UK Gov LD WG mailing list http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/public-ukgovld/
<bhyland> PhilA2 offered the use of W3C infrastructure to facilitate discussions...
<bhyland> RE: TPAC 2012 GLD breakout, We discussed approaches to resolve the “http://www.theodi.org/blog/four-challenges-open-data” as described by Jeni Tennison who attended the session.
bhyland: Jeni was at TPAC. She and I and Hadley discussed various things on her blog
<cygri> jpalmeida, could you please go to http://www.w3.org/2011/gld/track/users and add your IRC nickname there? this helps the scribe, otherwise the scribe needs to manually add it in the minutes every week :-)
PhilA2: My strong suggestion for date/p[lace for meeting is http://2013.data-forum.eu/
bhyland: Does anyone have suggestions for f2f timing etc.
<BartvanLeeuwen> PhilA2, +1
<mhausenblas> +1 to EDF but we had Ireland already ;)
<mhausenblas> Michael: Speaking as one of the General Chairs of this event
<bhyland> Yeah! Dublin in April :-)
<gatemezin> But what about 2 times Ireland?
<bhyland> PhilA highly encouraged this as a colocation meeting venue/time for the GLD WG
cygri: I remember we talked about a Google hangout this year
<mhausenblas> http://www.w3.org/2011/gld/wiki/Open_Days
<mhausenblas> Michael: but that's really the open office hours
<Zakim> cygri, you wanted to ask about Google Hangout thing that people were talking about
<gatemezin> Doodle : http://doodle.com/9q4bcgp87t862amr
bhyland: There was such a discussion, yes...
PhilA2: I thought we'd settled on Thursday 6 Dec
bhyland: Well then let's make it
so
... Does anyone from the US want to comment on US travel
likelihoods to get to Dublin
Mike_Pendleton: There's no way I could get support to go over seas
<bhyland> … No support for overseas travel.
tinagheen: +1 to Mike_Pendleton
mhausenblas: We can get from Galway to Dublin, yes
<jpalmeida> for some reason I've dropped out
<bhyland> PhilA re-iterated that F2F meetings are challenging with travel restrictions but really important. We need to ensure people who cannot travel can participate.
BenediktKaempgen: I would like to come to Galway or Dublin, yes, if I can. Google Hangout - definitely
bhyland: There are people who
have faded away from the WG because they're busy doing other
things that it would be good to have back
... To new people, I hope we can quickly find something for you
to get your teeth into
<Zakim> BartvanLeeuwen, you wanted to ask about isa core vocab status
BartvanLeeuwen: On agenda planning - something I'd like on an agenda... there was some discussion about the ISA core vocs and the w3.org namespace...
<sandro> (sorry, back -- had to drop off for a minute -- in person interruption)
<jpalmeida> I'm back
<bhyland> PhilA: Status of W3 namespace and approval to FPWS is dependent upon this group. They are actively on the "front burner"
<sandro> at iswc
BartvanLeeuwen: Next week is ISWC so can we discuss those vocabs in 2 weeks' time?
<BartvanLeeuwen> at iswc
<GofShu> an i am
bhyland: Who is at ISWC next week then?
<gatemezin> +1 to be there
bhyland: More than 4... I'll have a chat with George and see whether we should have a meeting next week
<bhyland> Sounds like about 4 people from our WG will be at Boston at ISWC.
bhyland: We'll let you know, no
later than Tuesday whether we have a meeting next week
... I think a number of us came back from TPAC feeling pretty
energised...
<olyerickson> BartvanLeeuwen: we could talk... email me your skype
<Zakim> cygri, you wanted to suggest review of open, overdue and pending-review actions for one of the next calls
cygri: Since we had agenda
planning on the agenda - I wanted to suggest we reviewed
actions and issues, to see which are still relevant
... Can we make the tracker relevant again
bhyland: Will do, yes. +1
Richard
... Thanks everyone
<BartvanLeeuwen> thx bhyland
<olyerickson> buy!
meeting adjourned
<jpalmeida> thx bye
<GofShu> bye
<bhyland> @olyerickson … you were very quiet … are you OK?
