The WG looked at the handful of remaining test cases for CSS 2.1
that don’t have two passes yet. Some are no doubt invalid, some will
need careful study at the ftf.
The upcoming ftf will have some extra guests to talk about layout grids and non-rectangular flows. The one after
that should have a forum right before or after it to meet with Japanese
designers and companies.

New CSS3 Publications: Backgrounds and Borders CR, Text WD, Image Values and Replaced Content WD
The CSSWG has published several new drafts this week:
- CSS Backgrounds and Borders Level 3 Candidate Recommendation
- This is the second Candidate Recommendation of CSS Backgrounds and Borders Level 3, and should be quite stable going forward. Changes since the last CR are listed. There are already implementations of various features out in the wild; the CSSWG welcomes any help creating a test suite.
- CSS Text level 3 Working Draft
- This module covers typesetting features and expands to handle various international requirements. With the addition of the hyphenation properties pulled from CSS3 GCPM, this draft is now solidly in the refining stage. Feedback is welcomed, especially from the Southeast Asian, South Asian, and Arabic script communities, from whom feedback has been noticeably lacking thus far.
- CSS Image Values and Replaced Content Working Draft
- This long-overdue update to the /TR page includes CSS gradients, and has also pulled in the various replaced-element manipulating properties from CSS3 GCPM and CSS3 Paged Media. Feedback is welcome on all aspects, but particularly on the gradients syntax.
Please send your comments to www-style@w3.org with [css3-background], [css3-text], or [css3-images] (as appropriate) and your comment topic in the subject line. Thanks!

Opera to investigate fixes for quotes-035, replaced-intrinsic-001, orphans-004a. Still need implementations for allowed-page-breaks-001a, forced-page-breaks-000, uri-016.
- Reviewed state of CSS2.1 issues list.
- CSS3 Backgrounds and Borders CR still blocked by Director’s approval step due lack of required telecon.
- Brief discussion about CSS Variables
- Brief discussion about multicol algorithm to determine column count, to be continued next week.
- Resolved: Publish CSS3 Text as updated Working Draft.

New Working Draft: CSS Writing Modes Level 3

Major changes since the last draft include an editorial overhaul, more details on the interaction of orthogonal flows, changes in requirements for horizontal-in-vertical feature, and some other minor tweaks to how things interact; no syntax was added or changed.
Please send feedback to www-style@w3.org with [css3-writing-modes] and the topic of your comment in the subject line.

Minutes and Resolutions Telecon 2011-01-26
- Resolved: Accept proposal to defer
display: run-in from CSS2.1 to CSS3 due to lack of interoperable implementations.
- Resolved: For CSS2.1 Issue 216, drop
vertical-align from the required list of properties that apply to ::first-line.
- Resolved: For CSS2.1 Issue 214, make interaction of bidi and white-space trimming undefined for CSS2.1 due to lack of correct implementations. (Leave current behavior as a suggestion.)
- Resolved: For CSS2.1 Issue 215, make containing block formed by positioned inline split across multiple lines undefined.
- Resolved: Have CSS2.1 allow two possible margin collapsing behaviors in the margin-collapse-clear case: the hypothetical position before clearance is applied may be calculated either with respect to the parent block, or with respect to the containing block formatting context. (The preferred behavior is the latter, since it doesn’t mysteriously eat margins and make
clear to make things move up. But we need to evaluate web compat since Acid2 and therefore all browsers do the former.)
- Resolved: Publish updated Working Draft of CSS3 Images
- Resolved: Publish updated Working Draft of CSS3 Writing Modes
