The current specification of the animation sandwich model in CSS3 Animation does not describe how CSS3 Transitions and SMIL Animations contribute to the animation sandwich model. For SMIL Animations there is a section "The animation sandwich model"[1]. The wording there lead to some wrong assumptions and does not consider CSS animations or transitions. That is why CSS3 Animation should fill the gap. The image http://dev.w3.org/csswg/css3-animations/sandwich.png needs an update as well. The SVG WG decided that CSS3 Animations should not mention SMIL animation. Rik Cabanier from the SVG WG got an action to find ways to harmonize SMIL animation and CSS Animation/Transitions independent of this specification.. Therefore the SVG part of this bug report is invalid. It should still be considered to add CSS Transitions in the Animation sandwich model.
