Hi there,

I noticed that when I attempted to check a page with no opening html tag, that this error was not caught by the validator.

I created a minimal test case for you to try.

When I validate this url it passes the test when it should not.

Am I misunderstanding this or is there a problem with the script? Thanks!

The opening html tag is optional in HTML 4.01:

I'm not sure about HTML 5, but in any case, passes your test case as valid too, which means that if this is an error, the bug should be reported according to the bug reporting instructions:
