Action 10

<trackbot> Sorry, bad ACTION syntax

<sandro> action-10?

<trackbot> ACTION-10 -- Christophe Gueret to talk with Paul about provenance -- due 2011-09-29 -- OPEN

<trackbot> http://www.w3.org/2011/gld/track/actions/10

Action-9?

<trackbot> ACTION-9 -- John Erickson to plug in "seed" content re: pragmatic provenance into the Best Practices wiki -- due 2011-09-29 -- OPEN

<trackbot> http://www.w3.org/2011/gld/track/actions/9

<bhyland> Correction: Michael Hausenblas has been busy on R2RML and Direct Mapping which published as Last Call, http://www.w3.org/blog/SW/2011/09/20/last-call-r2rml-and-a-direct-mapping-of-relational-data-to-rdf/

<bhyland> Congrats to Michael for that work … so he got a "pass" on GLD WG Best Practices work (so what is my excuse?!)

olyerickson has not done anything on Action-9

George's Action...

Charter Item 2.3 (George)

<bhyland> Subtopic: Community Directory, main page is here, http://www.w3.org/2011/gld/wiki/Community_Directory_Discussion_Summary

Standard Vocabulary Discussion

<bhyland> http://www.w3.org/2011/gld/wiki/Vocabulary_Discussion_Summary

<cgueret_home> hi

cygri: skos extensions and DDI (??) discussion

<George_> http://www.w3.org/2011/gld/wiki/ISO_Extensions_to_SKOS

* DDI -> std used in social sciences etc for data collection

* how to represent classfications systems in RDF

* some concerns re: expressivity of SKOS

<ZacharyWhitley> DDI = Data Documentation Initiative

* example: some specification systems require multiple "levels" : sectors, sub-sectors, etc; other similar examples

* group looked at properties/classes that could me added to skos to capure this info

* group came up with small number of things that, if added, would allow SKOS to capture a large number of things

<George_> http://www.ddialliance.org/

<George_> http://www.iso.org/iso/catalogue_detail.htm?csnumber=20057

<George_> the turtle file is visible here - http://www.w3.org/2011/gld/wiki/ISO_Extensions_to_SKOS

* created: short report, TTL file with extensions (not published), currently email discussions on how to proceed

* effect would be: publishers and maintainers of high-end classification systems would be willing to publish in RDF

<bkaempgen> +q

george -> actual proposed TTL is above ("ISO_Extensions...")

Q: What list is discussionon A: it's currently "private"

?? is working with MS student on related problem, would be useful to participate

??+1 notes that some of this discussion will be happening on "Open Gov Vocab Mailing List"

?? is Benedict (nick???)

??+1 is Cory (nick????)

<bhyland> NB: The Open Gov Vocab mailing list of which you speak is a US only effort. I encourage broadening to the GLD WG if appropriate.

<bkaempgen> bkaempgen is Benedikt

<bkaempgen> +q

cygri: concern, will cuirrent ad hoc discussion participants need to sign up to a particular list?

<bhyland> Would the caller from Washington DC (aadd) and country code +91 please tell zakim who you are. TIA

* protecting inb0xes

<bkaempgen> maybe discuss on publishing-statistical-data@googlegroups.com ?

<Biplav> +91 => Biplav (India's country code); Sorry for slippery fingers with RC chat software.

cygri: Q: how to delineate between "GLD WG stuff" and other stuff

Suggestion: Use Usenet principles: if it becomes noise, create a new list...

Could the people having the party please mute???

George: look at "vacbulary page"

* what is the "list of things" that should be on the vocab list

POINT OF ORDER: George, are you looking ast a page?

George is looking at: http://www.w3.org/2011/gld/wiki/Vocabulary_Discussion_Summary

<boris> http://www.w3.org/2011/gld/wiki/Vocabulary_Discussion_Summary

<bhyland> We are talking about http://www.w3.org/2011/gld/wiki/Vocabulary_Discussion_Summary

<BartvanLeeuwen> +q

Volunteers to discuss Vocabs on http://www.w3.org/2011/gld/wiki/Vocabulary_Discussion_Summary

Q (bhyland): How to add?

A (George): Now, edit via wiki (for now)

-1 to spec writing tools

hg is an epic fail in certain other WGs

1 to Wiki unil we have issues

;)

<Biplav> I have a question - is "data retention" terms relevant for Vocabularies? Tax data, health records.

Missing from current list of Vocab: Provenance...

BartvanLeeuwen: how to express events in tiome

BartvanLeeuwen will edit wiki himself

<John> happy to update GeoSpatial section

Others in WG should edit wiki, add vocabs they think are "important"

olyerickson will add Prov-related

Top-level link to W3C "PROV" WG http://www.w3.org/2011/prov/wiki/Main_Page

cygri: Look at (our) charter, it is pretty clear on what is expected

* Minimum: look at each area, make sure we're "covered" by existing vocab work (or not)

<bhyland> +1 to cygri's understanding of what the WG charter suggests vis a vis vocabs. Keep it simple but useful IMO.

* In areas where there currently aren't W3C or other vocabs in use, make recommendations or highlight the concern

<boris> +1 to cygri

george: GLD Vocab "Summary" page is laid out based on Charter requirements
... Q: If something is NOT in charter, is it then out of scope?

sandro: Chairs can determine/adjust scope but...
... RE "recommendations," cannot exceed charter
... "cookbook" vs "recommendation"

george: Status of Cookbook?

<sandro> sandro: we can put advice about anything in the cookbook, but for full-force standards (W3C Recommendations) we need to stick to the charter.

bhyland/boris/michael: Cookbook Status

bhyland: "seed material" is material from LGD book (SPringer, in press)

<BartvanLeeuwen> +q

* in cookbook, approx. 15 vocabs req'd for use in gov't

bhyland: to add vocab in "cookbook" to wiki

<scribe> ACTION: bhyland to add vocab in "cookbook" to wiki [recorded in http://www.w3.org/2011/10/06-gld-minutes.html#action01]

<trackbot> Created ACTION-11 - Add vocab in "cookbook" to wiki [on Bernadette Hyland - due 2011-10-13].

?? Q; private/public participation

<GeraldSteeman> There are US govt challenges

* in/out of charter

?? is "Biplav Srivastava"

<cygri> Biplav, charter is here: http://www.w3.org/2011/gld/charter

<sandro> I can imagine this (incentives) COULD be a kind of strategy listed in the Directory....

<GeraldSteeman> http://www.nasa.gov/topics/technology/centennial/index.html as an aero challenge

<bhyland> ACTION-11 is for bhyland to add content for all "7 steps" including vocabulary summary for government.

<George_> ack http://www.w3.org/2011/gld/wiki/ISO_Extensions_to_SKOS

Bart: Q: Participating in Linked Data Cookbook effort; no clue how to contribute

<BartvanLeeuwen> -q

george: talk to bhyland

bhyland is "yeast" for thecookbook (who's the sugar?)

george: In the context of the "Five Areas", is there anything obviously missing that needs to be dded

* for example: Vcard? FOAF?

Cory (??): Fundamental units?

Cookbook - I agree to get the cookbook "starter yeast" put on wiki by Monday next week. The content I've prepared is peer-reviewed and may help to get the cookbook rolling in ernest.

<gatemezi> Maybe also legislation?

Sandro: units are out-of-scope

<sandro> http://schema.org/Person

<sandro> (another option)

Sandro: Another contender is Schema.org (see above)

There's a difference between "practical" vs "technically possible" ...

cygri: Don't forget about DCMI

<George_> out of scope - licensing, units, time - possible cookbook topics?

+1 to DCMI (shoudk be a default)

<GeraldSteeman> +1 DCMI

bhyland: suggest all in common use with guidance, esp. w.r.t. in'l requirements

bkaempgen: Are specific use cases required?

<cygri> bkaempgen++

<BartvanLeeuwen> +1 for use cases

<gatemezi> Q: is it a way to check "w3c good standing work?

<cygri> 100% agree with George

George: GLD can "collect" potentially useful vocabs

<bhyland> George: Would like to see the Vocabulary deliverables specify clear guidance for the 4 sub-deliverables so gov't has clear guidelines (to reduce ambiguity).

Out of time...

Scribe_next_week Tina

Upcoming Events:

* TPAC

<bhyland> arg!

<HadleyBeeman> I'd be happy to see whoever is coming to TPAC… Let me know if you'll be there!

<John> apologies for next 3 weeks

Meeting is adjourned: 11a

<HadleyBeeman> Thanks, George!

<BartvanLeeuwen> thx george

<GeraldSteeman> I'm alt for next week, so I'll stay on the line.
