2. Tips - Developing Examples

Please review the examples in the Developing Tips. Keep in mind that for some people examples are very helpful, and for some people they add clutter or distract from the main text.

For each tip, consider: Does the example support the tip sufficiently? Is there a better example? How can the example be made more clear or more simple?

Under each example is a link to the related GitHub issue where you can put any comments (or, if you're not comfortable with GitHub, you can put comments below). If a GitHub issue is closed, feel free to reopen it if you have comments.

George Heake I reviewed the examples and put my comments below. I think the examples are listed in such a way, a user can pick what category or topic they want to "dive" into. I also believe all the examples support the tips. I don't think you could more simple then they are right now.
Andrew Arch
Reinaldo Ferraz I reviewed the examples and put my comments in GitHub.
Paul Schantz I'm not going to be able to get to this, and I will pass on commenting on it.

Shadi Abou-Zahra I reviewed the examples and put my comments in GitHub. Excellent work, coming along *really* nicely!
David Berman I'm not going to be able to get to this, and I will pass on commenting on it.
Brent Bakken I reviewed the examples and put my comments in GitHub.
Vicki Menezes Miller I have not gotten to this yet, and will do it by: [put in the Comment field the date by which you will get to it] I'm sorry I couldn't get to this.
Sharron Rush
Shawn Lawton Henry I have not gotten to this yet, and will do it by: [put in the Comment field the date by which you will get to it]
James Green I reviewed the examples and put my comments below. I am not comfortable with the umbrella image alt text, i think it's way too subjective and may just confuse people. I do like the examples in Designing.
Jonathan Metz I reviewed the examples and put my comments in GitHub.

3. Tips - Designing - Alternative Text Tip

summary | by responder | by choice

Based on EOWG input and further consideration, we propose including in Tips on Designing a tip on alt text. Note that while some people do not think alt text should be in Designing, other feel strongly that it should. We're therefore asking if you would be OK with including it (even if it's not your preference) or if you object.

Please review the updated tip and examples at: Providing alternative text for images and add any comments into GitHub #78 (or, if you're not comfortable with GitHub, you can put comments below).

Check a box in both the first section "Include it?:" and the second "Review:".

I strongly dislike adding this same tip to all three pages "writing", "designing", and "developing" - this is really sending out the wrong message about accessibility, though I do agree that 1.1.1 is a very central accessibility requirement. I don't have a good suggestion for addressing this issue.

Responder Tips - Developing Tip on CAPTCHAComments
George Heake
  • I strongly think we should include a tip in CAPTCHA.
Besides thinking it is very important of both design and development, it also important build awareness in the area of accessible CAPTCHA's. Although it seems that we see more accessible CAPTCHA's, there is still a long way to go.
Andrew Arch
  • I strongly think we should include a tip in CAPTCHA.
most instances are very problematic from both an accessibility and usability perspective

  • I strongly think we should include a tip in CAPTCHA.
As a developer, I would love to be able to point stakeholders pressuring me to use CAPTCHAs to easy-to-understand reasoning about if/when/how to use and code CAPTCHAs.
Lydia Harkey

Howard Kramer
Shadi Abou-Zahra
  • I strongly think we should include a tip in CAPTCHA.
I really like the way it is phrased right now, which also matches the WCAG WG position and general consensus - it is not "forbidden" but not encouraged - good tip to know when starting off with accessibility!
David Berman

Brent Bakken
  • I mildly think we should include a tip in CAPTCHA.
  • Comments: I added comments in GitHub or below.
Even if reCAPTCHA and No CAPTCHA are slowly gaining ground, CAPTCHA will still be used for quite some time. I believe the Pro argument Kevin stated about "massive impact" is reason for it to be called out in our Tips for Developing.

I think CAPTCHA is fundamentally flawed, and merely mentioning it endorses the possibility of it's use. I think web developers should cease using this technology. Suggesting developers use an accessible alternative to CAPTCHA is like suggesting using an accessible alternative to Flash. In short, not using it would be the accessible alternative. My .02.
