- Proposed Recommendation of mobileOK Basic Tests 1.0

The Mobile Web Best Practices Working Group has released the Proposed
Recommendation of the W3C mobileOK Basic Tests 1.0 document. The
document defines tests that may be automatically checked by Web authors
to assert that they took some of the mobile constraints into account
while developing their content. The tests are based on the W3C Mobile Web Best Practices
1.0 and are implemented in the W3C mobileOK Checker.
- W3C Invites Community to Explore Future of Social Networking in
Workshop — 14 October 2008
W3C invites people to participate in the upcoming Mobile Web Initiative
Workshop on the Future of
Social Networking, to be hosted by Universitat Politècnica de
Catalunya and ReadyPeople in Barcelona (Spain) on 15-16 January 2009. The
goal of this workshop is to bring together industry actors to foster
discussion andanalyse risks and opportunities of social networking
industry, and to define plans for the future of the industry, including
opportunities of creation of a W3C group to continue the discussion. Position papers are
due November 20. This workshop also offers a sponsorship
opportunity for interested parties.
- W3C Organizes Workshop on Security for Access to Device APIs
from the Web — 9 October 2008
W3C invites people to participate in the upcoming Mobile Web Initiative
Workshop on Security for
Access to Device APIs from the Web, to be hosted by Vodafone in
London (UK) on 10-11 December 2008. The goal of this workshop is to bring
together people from a wide variety of backgrounds (API designers,
security experts, usability experts, mobile industry actors, mobile
developpers, etc.) to discuss the security challenges involved in
allowing Web applications and widgets to access the APIs that allow to
control these features (e.g., cameras, gps, address books, etc.).
Position papers are due 30 October.
- Online training course on Mobile Web Best Practices
— 6 October 2008
The W3C Mobile Web Initiative is opening up a new session of its on-line
training course on the Mobile Web Best Practices, starting October 13,
for a duration of 5 weeks. The course is free, but limited to 100

The Mobile Web Best Practices
Working Group has released a Last Call
Working Draft of the Content Transformation Guidelines specification
for public review. The document provides means for content providers and
content transformation proxies to work together and deliver the best
possible experience of the Web on a user's device.
The community is invited to review and comment the document before 16
September 2008. Comments should be sent to public-bpwg-comments@w3.org
(publicly archived).

The Mobile Web Test Suites
Working Group has released a new stable version of its Web Compatibility Testfor
Mobile Browsers, featuring more
technologies and several improvements over the previous version. Read

- Mobile Web Best Practices as a W3C Recommendation —
29 July 2008
W3C today announced new standards that will make it easier for people to
browse the Web on mobile devices. Mobile Web Best
Practices 1.0 condenses the experience of many mobile Web
stakeholders into practical advice on creating mobile-friendly content.
These guidelines will help to improve the experience of people browsing
the Web on awide array of mobile handsets. W3C published a second Web
standard today: XHTML Basic
1.1 Recommendation, the preferred format specification of the Best
Practices. With this, there is now a full convergence in mobile markup
languages, including those developed by the Open Mobile Alliance (OMA).
The Mobile Web Best Practices Working Group also published today the
first draft of a next generation of guidelines, Mobile Web
Application Best Practices, aimed at mobile Web applications and

- Last Call Working Draft of mobileOK Basic Tests 1.0

The Mobile Web Best Practices
Working Group has released the fourth
Last Call Working Draft of the mobileOK Basic Tests 1.0 document. The
document defines the tests that provide the basis for making a claim of
W3C mobileOK Basic conformance and are based on the W3C Mobile Web Best Practices.
The new version fixes a few errors that appeared during the
implementation period of the previous Candidate Recommendation. The
community is invited to review and comment the document before 30 June
2008.
- Global Dialogue with W3C Workshop Participants in Sao Paulo,
Brazil — 3 June 2008
You are invited today 3 June 2008, from 12:30 to 2:30 pm ET, to join a
discussion with the international participants attending the W3C Workshop on the Role of
Mobile Technologies in Fostering Social Development, currently
undergoing in São Paulo, Brazil. Participants will address specific
challenges of using mobile phones and Web technologies to deliver
services to underprivileged populations of developing countries. This
Global Dialogue is facilitated by the World Bank's e-Development Thematic
Group per request from W3C and its members in Washington DC and São

- W3C Launches Group to Help Bridge the Digital Divide

As part of the growing set of W3C initiatives related to social
development, W3C MWI invites participation in the new Mobile Web for Development (MW4D)
Interest Group, chartered to explore the potential of mobile
technology to help bridge the digital divide. This work takes place under
the auspices of the European Union's 7th Research Framework Programme
(FP7), part of the Digital

W3C is organizing an online
course to introduce Web developers and designers to W3C's Mobile Web
Best Practices. The online course will run for four weeks - from May 26
to June 20 2008.
- Web Compatibility Test for Mobile Browsers — 16
April 2008
The Mobile Web Test Suites
Working Group has released a stable version of its Web CompatibilityTest
for Mobile Browsers, and is calling
the community to send report of browser supports and feedback on the

Working Group has released its first draft
of the Content Transformation Guidelines. The document provides means
for content providers and content transformation proxies to work together
and deliver the best possible experience of the Web on a user's device.
As always, comments on the document are welcome.
- First publication of W3C API for Device Description
Repositories — 9 April 2008
The Device Description Working
Group published the first
official publication of their Device Description Repository Simple
API. This API will allow content developers to use a uniform set of
functions calls across device descriptions repositories and across
languages, when developing content tailored to take into account a range
of factors such as screen size, markup language support and image format
support. Please send feedback on this document (before May 1st) before
its further progress on the W3C Recommendation track.
- Call for Participation for the W3C Workshop on the Role of
MobileTechnologies in Fostering Social Development — 29
February 2008
Position papers are due 20 April for the W3C Workshop on the Role of
Mobile Technologies in Fostering Social Development on 2-3 June 2008
in São Paulo, Brazil. The goal of the workshop is to understand specific
challenges of using mobile phones and Web technologies to deliver
services to underprivileged populations of developing countries.

on 19 March 08.
- Philipp Hoschka will present at Mobile
Internet, to be held in Berlin, Germany, from 31 March to 3 April
08.

- The W3C
track @ the WWW08 conference
holds a MWI
session, on 23 April, in Beijing, China.
- W3C mobileOK checker released as Beta — 8 February
2008
W3C invites Web content authors to run the beta release
of the W3C mobileOK checker
and make their content work on a broad range of mobile devices. Since the
alpha release, many bugs have been squashed, and the coverage of the spec
has been significantly increased. This new version provides more accurate
results and a more reliable experience in general. The mobileOK
checker Task Force in the Mobile Web Best Practices Working Group
welcomes any feedback on the tool and suggestions for improving it.

Web USA, on 23 January 2008, in San Francisco, USA.
- MWI will exhibit at the Mobile World Congress,
known as the largest mobile event in the world. We will welcome
visitors in Hall
The MobiWeb2.0 project is financed by the European Union's 7th Research
Framework Program (FP7) (INFSO-ICT-212430) under the challenge "The Network of the
Future"
The project started on 1 January 2008, and has a duration of 24 months.
