HCLSIG/PharmaOntology/Meetings/2010-04-02 Conference Call

From W3C Wiki

Present : trish, elgar, bosse, eric miller, chris

The google doc contains our progress and position moving forward - edited regularly - this should move to the wiki as it develops further

Minutes - in brief - from today's call :

Discussions regarding the User Interface Discussions regarding the whole picture - eric's flow diagram - perfecting this to represent the task at hand (thanks to all who contributed with comments!) Discussions regarding the application/combination of these efforts across different EHRs (ie Veterans Administration, Marshfield, other) Discussions about how we can demonstrate utility of : semantic interoperability, the TMO, a UI, intricate query - to clinicians or to the industry Discussions pertaining to the exact types of questions posed by the different roles we describe ( to discuss this with Luke at next call) Discussions regarding Conor's presentation and how we can combine strategies - perhaps introduce Luke's initiatives (in combination with eMERGE) to Connor to attempt to query vista in a similar fashion to marshfield, mayo - and visa versa, could connor provide insight into helping marshfield enhance semantically interoperability and RDFizing his data the UI will follow on to accommodate

We had a great discussion on uptake of the semantic web relating to physicians/researchers/those in industry - How can we best demonstrate utility? Physicians are slow to understand(if ever) what the semantic web is - Eric made an interesting remark asking if they will ever really need to know? Perhaps if we begin to answer the questions they have and provide a rapid link to the evidence base they need, they may never - utility can be proven indirectly in this way - Likewise to those in the industry and academia as well - Trish then agreed and furthered the comment proposing methods for interdisciplinary collaboration and understanding the needs of the user and how we can actually serve them

Plans for the next weeks Eric - incorporation of comments into the main flow chart for re-distribution to all Chris& Bosse- revision and derivation of queries clinical/pharma (what questions we have for the data - EHRs) - combine with Luke's group - to approach connor Trish - thinking about ways to present our work - the value of the semantic web and tmo Elgar - Applications for the TMO - how to demonstrate use across disciplines Luke - When back from holiday, have a glance at the googledoc, and try and provide us with a list of the issues you face (problems with queries, data management, formatting, interoperability, anything at all) as we would like to know where and how we can best focus our efforts to complement and help or contribute to your work Luke - what are some examples of the clinical questions you ask of your data? How long does it take to derive answers? How many people does it take to do it and how do you propose we can help by providing a working interface to make your job easier? Connor- to gain your views and opinion in subsequent discussions - thank you from the group for your presentation an input on the UI!
