Translational Medicine

The Translational Medicine task force aims to demonstrate how information-based translational medicine activities can be made easier and more effective using semantic web technologies. Our main activity then is to develop a prototype knowledge base that captures terminology and expert knowledge as formal ontologies for which automated reasoning becomes possible, and have the ontology act as a global schema for the growing amounts of open, linked biomedical data that are part of the Semantic Web. We hope to demonstrate that the system can be used to

  • integrate patient data with ontologies and linked open (drug) data
  • identify suitable patients for clinical trials
  • present personalized medical treatments
  • augment drug discovery
  • create new opportunities across basic science, clinical research and medical care

Our efforts should enable researchers to answer new questions faster thereby reducing the globally redundant burden of integrating heterogeneous data while increasing the overall success of drug-related projects. Indeed, part of our goal is to demonstrate how pharmaceutical companies can benefit from a decentralization of data access and focus instead on analyzing patient and cohort data against the most advanced biomedical knowledge.
