Introduction

Note: essential information and links to commercial tools are part of the overall wiki page listing products and tools, which is maintained by the W3C Semantic Web staff and the Semantic Web community in general. That overall listing also links to this page, which may be used to give more details, descriptions, conditions, etc, on the products when necessary. It is typically maintained by the vendors themeselves.

The following is a partial list of commercial products that utilize W3C Semantic Web technologies. Commercial products are defined loosely as a tool, application, software, etc. that a company / person sells (and ideally another company / person is willing to buy).

Detailed information on Commercial Products

Adobe XMP

"Adobe's Extensible Metadata Platform (XMP) is a labeling technology that allows you to embed data about a file, known as metadata, into the file itself. With XMP, desktop applications and back-end publishing systems gain a common method for capturing, sharing, and leveraging this valuable metadata — opening the door for more efficient job processing, workflow automation, and rights management, among many other possibilities."

ontoprise's OntoBroker & OntoStudio

The inference engine OntoBroker processes ontologies and the logic represented inside. The support of the W3C Standards OWL and RDF(s) as well as F-Logic guarantees interoperability. Distributed OntoBroker-architectures can be employed to answer very complex queries very fast or to deal with high query rates - the information and the query processing is hereby distributed over multiple OntoBroker instances. OntoBroker provides a Web Service interface and can also be deployed in application servers. An explanation component provides natural language explanations for how a particular answer has been derived from given information. Due to its open framework architecture many different data sources (DBs, DMS, ERP, WS…) can be linked to OntoBroker via connectors.

OntoStudio is a professional Eclipse-based developing environment for ontology-based solutions. It combines modelling tools for ontologies and rules with components for the integration of heterogeneous data sources. Through its modular design, OntoStudio can be enriched with self-developed modules and be customized to personal needs. As ontology-languages OntoStudio supports W3C-standards OWL and RDF(S) and F-Logic for the logic-based processing of rules. OntoStudio comes along with many connectors to databases, documents, file-systems, applications and web-services. A free evaluation license is available.

Reengineering's Internet Business Logic (R)

This system works as a kind of Wiki for content in open vocabulary, executable English.

It's online at http://www.reengineeringllc.com , and shared use is free .

You can use your browser to specify applications, run them, and get English explanations of the results.

If you prefer to write programs rather than executable English specifications, you can use the system as an advanced rule processing endpoint on the web. Please see http://www.reengineeringllc.com/iblClient1.java .

Online examples that you can view, run and change include: End User Level RDF Querying with Explanations, Merging of Ontologies, Risk Analysis, Reasoning over Taxonomies, Knowledge Based Data Mining, Business Intelligence, and Supply Chain Management.

Unlike other Natural Language systems, this one does not need dictionary or grammar maintenance, yet the English semantics are strict. This is achieved via a trade off -- if an author wants the system to regard two different English sentences as having the same meaning, she must so state.

Please note that this is not yet another controlled English system -- the vocabulary is open, and so to a large extent is the syntax. However, the system can be used to manage and query controlled vocabularies, taxonomies and ontologies.

From a specification, the system can generate and run networked SQL queries that would be too complicated to write reliably by hand, and it can explain the results, in English, at the business or scientific level.

Semantic Discovery System (SDS)

The Semantic Discovery System

What is SDS?

A software program that provides end user ‘semantic query’. SDS Focus = Semantic Web - ‘legacy’ corporate data

What does SDS ‘do’?

Users query a ‘concept map’ view of the world. This happens with no requirement to write ‘code’

How does SDS work

OWL Concept Map generates SPARQL from user query. Connects to relevant data sources (RDBMS, Web …). Queries this data with lower level languages (SQL …)

SDS Provenance – What are its origins?

Started as Distributed Syntactic Query engine - U Pennsylvania. Development collaboration UPEN/GSK/ISD - In Production at GSK. U Manchester TAMBIS collaboration led to - SDS (Semantic + Syntactic Query processing over distributed complex datasets).
