Minutes and Resolutions 2010-03-24
- Reviewed status of i18n test submissions
- Resolved: Change prose of
url() syntax definition to match grammar, specifically, drop the requirement to escape commas since implementations don’t require it and existing pages depend on that.
- CSSWG received a request to review the View Modes spec
- Resolved: No comments or spaces between
a and n in an+b for :nth-child(). Comments and spaces allowed at other (token) boundaries.
- Resolved: No
// comments in CSS—nice to have, but too late to add. See follow-up comments on mailing list for why introducing this would be actively harmful.
- (Re)Resolved: Physical directions in CSS are absolute:
margin-top is always the top margin even in other writing-modes.
- Filed CSS2.1 Issue 165 on whether overflowing floats are sensitive to bidi like margins are.

- New alpha of CSS2.1 test suite is out, using new rewrite of build system.
- Discussion of jdaggett’s new CSS3 Fonts draft. Reviewed some issues, specifically:
- WG seems to agree with the level of
font-variant subproperty granularity in the draft.
- Still some concern over applying font-specific settings to a fallback list. See extended discussion.
- Ongoing discussion about how to handle sub/superscript support in a failsafe way.
- Discussed Tab’s proposal for gradient finite/infinite—ness and an
extend value for background-repeat.
- Briefly discussed Sylvain’s concerns about
background-clip. Further discussion deferred to later.

- Reviewed WAF draft for media queries features for widgets. Comments include that these features should be scoped more broadly since they are generally applicable; that the ‘all’ value seems redundant and unnecessary; that the names and descriptions are unclear; that there seem to be multiple feature axes covered by the same query; and that
mini and maximize are grammatically inconsistent. Daniel will send comments on behalf of the CSS WG.
- Discussed suggestion for vendor-neutral draft prefix. No agreement to introduce one.
- Discussed namespace rule in object model. Noted that current method of handling at-rules is likely to introduce accidental conflicts.
- Reviewed Simon’s animation-fill-rule proposal. The property name is confusing, but the proposal seems otherwise good, and will be added to the Animations draft with a note about possible renaming.

- Discussed status of CSS3 Lists, given there are known errors in the spec. There is no current editor, although fantasai will apply any submitted patches to the editor’s draft for things that are obviously wrong.
- Revisited
image-fit: auto; issue at Opera’s request:
- Resolved: Add image-fit:auto to editor’s draft, defined as
contain for video/* and fill for everything else, and mark it as possibly removed in the future.
- Resolved: Move
image-fit and image-position to CSS3 Image Values, mark as possibly moving again to CSS3 Generated and Replaced Content once that draft is under active editorship.

- Reviewed Opera’s message on
image-fit and image-position:
- Resolved: Replaced elements are always clipped to the content box.
- Resolved: Unqualified references to a box in the image-fit/position definitions should be “content box”.
- Resolved: Whether
image-fit and image-position inherit should match the inheritance behavior of SVG’s preserveAspectRatio attribute.
- Resolved: The proposal for a new
auto value to image-fit is not accepted.
- Briefly discussed animation fill modes and timing functions; further discussion deferred until later.

- Discussed CSS2.1 test suite status.
- Discussed Yves’ comment about background shorthand syntax for background-size. fantasai to write up proposal for using
as instead of / to differentiate background-size from background position in the shorthand.
- Discussed new API for computedStyle values. People seem happy in general with the direction Anne is going in his drafts.
- Discussed standardizing serialization of computedStyle values. Consensus is that having a spec for serialization is a good idea, although converging existing behavior to spec may be difficult and there is no consensus on whether we should push for converging existing implementations (due to backwards-compat concerns; this has the potential to break lots of scripts).
- Reviewed some new information about scientific notation in CSS.
- Started (but did not finish) discussion on image-fit issues recently raised on www-style by the SVG WG.

- Discussed border-radius color transition issue. Seem to have (tentative) consensus that the gradient be recommended as currently, but that the location of the color stops also be defined.

- CSS2.1 Test Suite Alpha 1 being published today.
- Resolved: Move forward with joint CSS/SVG Task Force: arrange joint afternoon meeting at next F2F if possible, set up telecons, work on charter, etc.
- Resolved: Move August F2F to 23-25.
- Discussed px vs. pt thread. Proposal is to fix 96px per inch. Whether inches fixed to reality or pixels fixed to screen res / viewing distance may vary (print would match real inches, screens align with viewing distance and/or screen res).

CSS Styling Attributes Last Call for Comments
The CSSWG has just published a Last Call Working Draft of the CSS Styling Attributes Leve 1 specification. Nothing new and exciting—style attributes have been here since the beginning—but now there’s a CSS spec that actually defines their syntax and interpretation. Please send any comments to www-style with “[css-style-attr] …summary of comment…” as the subject line. The deadline for comments is 9 February 2010.
