Related notes:

raise dialogbox as substitute for dialog as an ARIA role on pf list [recorded in http://www.w3.org/2008/12/05-pf-minutes.html#action01]

this is an alternate to the course of action outlined in:
* http://esw.w3.org/topic/PF/XTech/HTML5/Dialogue

at the same time, GJR will investigate improvements to the currently defined HTML5 element DIALOG (such as the ability to include stage directions and other
information which is not DIALOG, but which is necessary to indicate non-textual
and/or non-verbal content)

Gregory Rosmaita, 5 Dec 2008, 15:30:11

since aria-dialog already has multiple implementations and HTML5's DIALOG element has none, the PFWG agreed that the spelling d i a l o g be reserved for the concept covered by aria-dialog, whilst the element name used in HTML5 be changed either to the semantically appropriate DIALOGUE (defined in standard reference works as a spoken exchange), or the more compact D, since it will be used as a flow element (both inline and block) as detailed in the wiki pages located at:

http://esw.w3.org/topic/PF/XTech/HTML5/D
http://esw.w3.org/topic/PF/XTech/HTML5/DDiscussion

the proposal for a single letter element to indicate dialog applies to both HTML5 and XHTML2, as it fills a need that current markup cannot sufficiently, nor correctly, mark dialog declaratively
