This is an archived snapshot of W3C's public bugzilla bug tracker, decommissioned in April 2019. Please see the home page for more details.
This question pops up every now and then. Adding support for gzip would require no changes to the validator code, just installing Compress::Zlib on v.w.o should be enough; LWP would do things transparently then. If implemented, it would however have some kind of effect on the CPU load (probably not a problem), and maybe the documentation should say a few words about the implementation (since LWP uses TE instead of the more usual Accept-Encoding). http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/www-validator/2004Jul/0173.html
FWIW libcompress-zlib-perl is installed on qa-dev.
Implementation in CVS.
