Our error logs have hundreds of thousands of lines like this:
File does not exist: /usr/local/validator/htdocs/favicon.ico
caused by that stupid de facto standard that goes look for a favicon in well-known-location. 

Adding a <link rel="shortcut icon" ... should do the trick.
