Airports

Osaka Kansai International Airport (KIX) Travel time: 1h30 by public transportation

Osaka Itami Airport (ITM) (Domestic only) – Travel time: between 1h00 and 1h15 by public transportation

Kobe Airport (UKB) (Domestic only) – Travel time: 12 minutes by public transportation

Other international airports to consider and complement with a Shinkansen ride and, in some cases, a local train ride: Tokyo (HND, NRT), Fukuoka (FUK), Nagoya (NGO).

Note: If you can choose your Tokyo airport, pick Haneda, as the connection to the high speed train is significantly easier/shorter.

See the tips section below for additional information on possible airports and train connections, from closest to Kobe to furthest from Kobe

From Tokyo

If you are coming to Kobe from the Tokyo area, we recommend taking the Shinkansen high-speed train which stops at Shin-Kobe Station.

Shinkansen from Tokyo station to Shin Kobe station
Travel time: 2h44

Note: You may but don't need to purchase train tickets in advance. Shinkansen trains are very frequent, and buying a ticket doesn't take much time at all. However, Shinkansen train tickets are specific to a particular train that departs at a given time.

Travellers can take advantage of the Shinkansen smartEX mobile application to buy a ticket on the fly, even minutes before boarding the high-speed train.

If the mobile app does not work, use the automated ticket vending machines or the ticket booths within the station.

Additional information on possible airports and train connections from closest to Kobe to furthest from Kobe

Kobe Airport
The airport is right next to the venue but this small airport only handles a few international flights. It may be an option for travelers connecting from an international airport.
Osaka Itami Airport
The airport is small and caters exclusively to domestic flights. It may be an option for travelers connecting from an international airport. It is closer in distance to the venue than Osaka's main "Kansai" airport, and marginally shorter in transport time, but not really in transport complexity.
Osaka Kansai Airport
The airport is much closer to Kobe than Tokyo is. The train network is really good, and it takes about 1.5h from the airport to Kobe International Conference Center, with two connections, switching in downtown Kobe at Shin Osaka Station to the local train on the JR Kobe line, and then transferring at Sannomiya Station to take the Port Liner to Shimin Hiroba Station, which is the closest station to the meeting venue.
Nagoya Chubu Centrair International Airport
The international airport may be an option for travellers from certain locations. The airport is further than Osaka in distance, but has the same number of connections (1), and barely takes more time (1h45) with the high speed train (Shinkansen).
Tokyo Haneda Airport
The international airport is significantly further, but with very good train connections. Count 3h and a more expensive price for the train, but it is simple: just one connection, transferring at Shinagawa Station to take the Shinkansen to Shin-Kobe Station in downtown Kobe.
Tokyo Narita Airport
The international airport is the furthest from Kobe (closer to 4h), and the connections aren't as nice as Haneda's (at least 2 changes instead of 1). Getting from the airport to the Shinkansen is a bit complex, but the rest of the journey is easy. If flights exist for Kansai airport or Haneda, avoid Narita. But if it is the only reasonable option, it is still manageable.
