Lionel_Wolberger: Looking at calendar ...

TPAC follow-ups

<matatk> https://www.w3.org/WAI/APA/wiki/Meetings/TPAC_2024

<matatk> Highly recommend watching this stream of W3C @ 30: https://www.w3.org/2024/09/TPAC/w3c-30.html

matatk: Added the link to the APA WIKI page where APA is capturing the Adapt actions as well

matatk: Notes above wiki will have followon actions, minutes to meetings, etc
… on both Symbols and Destinations we have a clear path forward to implementation, with no blockers

janina: WHATWG felt that they have existing technology to achieve our goals
… it is up to us to examine that, and either agree or inform them otherwise

matatk: On both symbols and destionations we should prototype. WHAT belief is that we have sufficient ml

matatk: Regarding Destinations on Link Sets, the Link Set document is basically a different way of doing what you can do today with HTML markup

janina: If not, we should show why and how via prototype

matatk: we will show a way of using 'rel
… to reproduce these results
… this 'rel' approach will work with subsites
… if this approach achieves uptake and adoption, we could look to a phase II with linksets to supply functionality missing with this markup
… Adapt is asked to produce a Note Track document giving this 'Best Practice' which leverages the HTML infrastructure (and 'rel') to achieve the use case of Well Known Destinations

Abhinav: Confirming? Build rhel and linksets?

matatk: Yes

Abhinav: The linkset is a way of making the HTML markup more performant

matatk: WHAT suggests existing HTML already supports our use cases, just not used yet on the web. We should go that way

matatk: We can define best practices with existing ML

matatk: Open questions on what/how to do subsites, but subsites are supportable with existing ML

matatk: On symbols WHAT suggests ...

matatk: Regarding symbols, we have supporters. We are being asked to try a particular approach.
… the approach that WHAT-WG advocated is to use existing markup, like a ruby element (with an added attribute to hide it from most people)
… they suggest (a) take an existing symbol set, say ARASAAC (2) convert it to a font with a known process (3) the font will be keyed on the code points for the bliss subset that is going into unicode
… example tea is, in bliss, two code points (a) and (b). The font can be constructed to render the proper symbol

matatk: We expressed the concern that this takes great expertise, making fonts out of symbol sets
… WHAT-WG responded, we should try this first

Annalu: Great news, but does raise the question of making graphic representation systems within the constrains of a font
… this can be compared with emojis.

matatk: q?

<Annalu> me too russell

Russell: There are multiple issues with this direction.
… Let's compare it with spelling in different languages: imagine a font that can render the correct work in English, and in French
… The Unicode blocker will not clear in the near future.

<Annalu> We need to find funding to complete the Unicode proposal

<Annalu> ?

Lionel_Wolberger: Much discussion about the status of the Bliss Community in relation to Unicode.

matatk: We spoke to them about Chapter Titles in media
… they pointed out there are multiple standards in motion regarding time-based media
… James Craig from Apple is involved in metadata for media (as well as being a Unicode supporter)

<Annalu> I will send a summary around as to where we are in the Unicode proposal. I will do this over the weekend.

matatk: chapter titles are text strings.

Proposal on how to work

janina: Historically APA has worked not only in teleconference and annually
… we have sometimes had problem solving meetings, and face-to-face meetings somewhere appropriate
… I propose we have a face-to-face meeting
… such a meeting can, in a single get together, work out more than can be done in weekly piecemeal fashion

<Annalu> I would be very happy to meet up. So sorry but I need to go to teach. Also apologies but I will not be able to attend on Tuesdays from 22nd - hope to rejoin when I can.
