Agenda Review & Announcements

janina: Some additional items apart from our stock agenda.

janina: We'll touch on what was and what will be.

janina: One announcement: At some point in the next six months, sooner rather than later, we will be moving ot new Zoom coordinates for our telecons.

janina: Our current Zoom coordinates are provided by MIT. Beginning with the 501C3 status, MIT and W3C have parted ways (among other things).

janina: Not all of the legal matters for the legal entity are finished, but we're over the hill.

janina: MIT has granted us use of their Zoom for the transitional period.

janina: At some point in the coming half year we will be moving ot W3C-speficif Zoom coordinates.

janina: The rest of the infrastructure has migrated away from MIT's servers. This should mean that the pages will remain the same, just changing the coordinates as such.

Announcing Adapt Symbols CR https://www.w3.org/TR/adapt-symbols/

janina: The symbols module from WAI-Adapt has been approved for publication as a CR. Expected to publish tomorrow.

janina: Messaging is ready, approvals are in place.

janina: *The agenda pointer will be alive URL as of publication.

WoT Architecture Review https://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/public-apa/2023Jan/0000.html

niklasegger: Most of the things to note are in the e-mail of Jan 2.

janina: Two additional things: failure recovery, specifically a11e failure recovery, for instance if electricity is out or the connection is out.

janina: There needs to be a way to do a reboot, a restart and so on. It's about being able to recover from failure from the unit and in an accessible way.

janina: The support for Matter, if it obviates the need for middleware or not, has to be discussed.

janina: If it does, we would push for Matter support for a11y reasons.

janina: We will talk about this in RQTF. We will discuss it with Wot, probably.

niklasegger: I read a lot about powper outages online these days. I support both ideas.

matatk: +1 @janina.

Fredrik: I'll try and find out the accessibility structures in the Matter standardization groups.

janina: We're looking at an APA statement before the month is over.

CSS Update (Paul) https://github.com/w3c/css-a11y/issues

PaulG: I reviewed this week's agenda. Nothing really concerning.

<PaulG> https://github.com/w3c/csswg-drafts/issues/8195

PaulG: On 14 Dec there was this issue:

PaulG: I have a concern that the masonry layout that they are discussing to want to go to WD has a tab ordering concern that is non addressed.

<PaulG> https://codepen.io/AutoSponge/pen/ExRqYor

PaulG: I just modified the Codepen that was provided.

PaulG: If you use your browser or evtools to manipulate the shape of the viewport, you'll see that the numbers will change into potentially illogical order for tabbing.

PaulG: This is not ideal.

PaulG: This is a trap for devs who want to use the new flashy thing and do a masonry layout and the users will be lost in this, especially with low focus visibility.

PaulG: Should I bring this up with CSSWG?

janina: It seems you don't need a disability to not liek irrational tab ordering.

Lionel_Wolberger: Thanks for the introduction, Paul. I totally agree with you in spirit.

Lionel_Wolberger: The laoyt itself is disorderred in and of itself, by design, so to say. It is about catching the user's eye. *The mild confusiosn in the focus order are consistent with the confusedness of the layout itself.

Lionel_Wolberger: I want to honour everything yous aid, Paul, but the heart of this is kind of aidorderliness. The basic left to right is preserved and gets mixed up from time to time.

PaulG: This is exactly the line I am trying to straddle.

PaulG: My reservation is that someone will use this in a scenario where order matters, but not realising it makes a hash of the tab order.

PaulG: I will ask CSSWG my qujestions in two weeks and get back to APA on the matter.
