<mountie> hi
<manu> scribe: Marta
<mountie> Haiyang, marta, Samuel, thessy, manu are on the phone
<manu> mountie: I spoke with AdrianHB and MikeSmith about them sharing information wrt. local industry and blockchain
<manu> manu: Yes, we overlap with the Web Payments WG call
<manu> marta: Let's start, thanks to Manu for joining the call today.
<mountie> https://digitalbazaar.github.io/flex-ledger/
<manu> mountie: Let's focus on Flex Ledger first, then hope to talk about CG's activity
<manu> mountie: Want to get to Flex Ledger first.
<manu> https://w3c.github.io/flex-ledger/
<weiler> scribe: weiler
manu: this is highly experimental
work; we're not saying this is the right way to do it. this is
just a conversation-starter.
... Digital Bazaar asked by DHS (homeland security) to review
existing blockchains. map out capabilities of each blockchain
w.r.t security and privacy.
... paper submitted to Rebooting Web of Trust.
... looks at bitcoin, etherium, ipfs, blockstack, stellar. re:
selective disclosure, anonymous identifiers, time to reach
consensus.
... then propose standard protocol and format to access of all
above. e.g. add ledger entry, get history
... trying to create unified data model and protocol for
different blockchains.
... not trying to restrict blockchains to this model, but
trying to spec a unified client based on observed
commonalities.
... does this make sense to you?
marta: concerned that you'll ruffle feathers.
manu: we've already gotten that.
"no reason to have unified interface"
... talked to bigchaindb and sovereign ledger; they're open to
discussing it. but you're right, there has been pushback.
... communities feel like theirs is the best and they see no
need to interop.
... ... some want to be able to switch ledgers in the future.
if they see features they want to add, etc.
mountie: @@ JSON.ld
manu: json should be supported,
but looking at other things e.g. yaml.
... can we unify protocol and translate data in blockchain into
unified format?
mountie: is the possible to handle ... w/ flexledger web could be gateway of transitions...
manu: we hope to see a standardized protocol to access blockchains.
mountie: how to do model achieving consensus?
manu: consensus mechanism is just a field; we don't otherwise model it.
<manu> https://w3c.github.io/flex-ledger/#http-api
(much digging into the details missed by the scribe)
manu: have the CG discussed the prospect of having thousands of ledgers?
marta: yes
manu: worth pursuing?
marta: yes, because @2. not sure we'll be able to come w/ solution unless industry wants to collaborate with us.
manu: dead in the water unless
other players sign on. hoping sovereign foundation and @3 and
get their thoughts on this. if we can get three blockchains
implementing to something, even if not flexledger, we might get
some traction
... maybe the right approach is not to convince big players,
but convince startups.
... to show some traction
mountie: web can be gateway for thousands of bc's. this is the right time to start.
manu: at tpac, the people w/ web
experience didn't really understand BC and were just there to
learn.
... need both bits of clue to create an API.
<manu> http://dhs2016ledger.digitalbazaar.com/
manu: I hope that showing W3C a
spec in a form they're familiar with, that will draw in more
people from w3c. by making it concrete v. abstract.
... feel free to play with implementation at link above.
<manu> scribe: manu
mountie: I found that there is great possibility to use Flex Ledger and study it.
marta: What do you need from the CG?
manu: 1. Do you want to adopt the Flex Ledger spec as a spec under incubation at the CG?
<marta> +1
<mountie> +1
manu: +1 :)
... Do you want us to pull companies in to discuss Flex Ledger
in the CG? Like Sovrin and BigChainDB?
marta: We discussed this on the call, wanted to make a decision on Flex Ledger - we already discussed before, but wanted you to come in and introduce it to us a bit.
mountie: I have some questions on Sovrin, but for BigChainDB - I think I have latest info on that.
<mountie> https://www.sovrin.org/ ?
<marta> I said that unless people vote within next 30 sec we should decide based on the existing votes
manu: Sovrin is a decentralized ledger that is tuned for identity.
mountie: Do we need to vote for the 2nd ask?
<marta> how many votes did we get
<marta> great lest then just go with a yes for both?
mountie: no objection to invite BigChainDB and Sovrin to Blockchain CG.
manu: Rodophe was there from BigChainDB at W3C TPAC.
mountie: That's the call for today, will try to get some activity started at Blockchain CG... been busy.
marta: We'll discuss that during the next meeting.
<marta> 2 weeks
mountie: When should we have the next meeting?
<marta> No, lets just have it in 2 weeks
manu: I wont be able to make most of these meetings because of the conflict w/ Web Payments WG :(
<marta> We will reschedule them as well
mountie: Let's take this to email
<marta> I'll send out a doodle
weiler: The CG web page has the old WebEx link, can we put up the current concall link?
mountie: Yes, I will update it
