transform()

https://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/public-xformsusers/2016May/0006

Steven: You have an implementation too?

Erik: Oh, I didn't think of that.
... The problem is how to pass a variable number of parameters.
... our function is more a way to call an XML pipeline
... but it is true that it could inform a solution

Alain: My one is very simple

Erik: It seems like a lot of text in the proposed XForms transform()
... much of the text is about possible options.
... the rest is straight forward
... the XPath 3 version has less text but does more
... with a simple implementation using maps.
... in XPath 2 we don't have that.

Steven: It uses maps to support a variable number of params of different types?

Erik: Yes.

Steven: Couldn't you use an instance for that?

Erik: It's not ideal

Steven: I don't see the difference.

Erik: [describes process]

Steven: That sounds like submission

Erik: Submission doesn't support multiple XML documents as parameters.

Alain: With the doc function with the map, it depends on the implementation, but it should be embedded in fact.
... it is quite easy to optimise.

Erik: With a map, it is by reference
... there is no copying involved, it is by reference.
... but embedding means copying
... in the case of the DOM
... Certainly for the basic parameters, using a bit of XML is not terrible, though cumbersome.
... That's the only difficulty, figuring out how to pass all the stuff.

Erik: we need to figure out if the existing proposals are reasonable or if we can work out something better.
... I don't see a big problem to work that out

Steven: What are the next steps?

Erik: Look at the parameter passing, choosing between the two proposals, I'll consider that.

Steven: Is that your task for the week?

Erik: Sounds good.
