title: Accessibility DPUB Task Force Weekly Meeting

Deborah: Review https://www.w3.org/dpub/IG/wiki/UseCase_Directory#Accessibility_and_Personalization and discuss that document's relationship to the Note, whether anything from it should be incorporated into the note, and what the future plan for those use cases (as separate from the note, updating them, maintenance, etc) will be.
... , we have not looked at these. Some of these haven't been addressed for these USe Cases and what are the purpose today.

Tzviya: Suzan Taylor, and Romain is trying to put together more formal use-cases. He is writing from angle of PWP. We should maybe include them in our Note, but we need to publish this.

Deborah: I think that if we missed anything here we can add to the Future section. Now they are thought of use-cases for PWP. This is weird way of saying Use-cases, and this is STEM, usecases Metadata. vs. what a user wants to do. Romain is trying to write more traditional use-cases. ie. adjuste font size, print out a 3D model etc… He wants this groups help flushing out the use-cases. I don't think it belongs in this NOTE.
... , so if there is stuff that won't be in the PWP we need to make sure it gets in our NOTE. If we have stuff that is the backbone of PWP that goes in Romain's doc. otherwise goes in ours.
... when we are done with our note we will help Romain with his Use-cases. Probably not worrying about any of it now, because we have too much and to do.

Tzviya: we should go over the doc.
... , there is some personalization issues with Media Layer 4, with the ARIA working group. They are trying to get user-style sheets so this work is being done. Ivan Markus and Tzviya reached out to WAI to find out who to contact since Jeanne is gone, and Michael C. is on vacation…. but there are others who can look at this.
... , Ivan says they need to look at if for tone,

Deborah: WCAG 2.0 & Education Environment / Educational Publishing

https://www.w3.org/dpub/IG/wiki/Timed_Tests_UC

https://www.w3.org/dpub/IG/wiki/Mirror_Sources_UC

https://www.w3.org/dpub/IG/wiki/Still_View_Moving_Content

• What is "Loss of functionality" for a reading experience (need to scroll horizontally)

Mia: Mirroring source. When someone is dealing with schools will scan an image and put it up which is not accessible. page # are accurate, be on same page as others and a11y.

George: so content doesn't need to be the same but equivalent.

Deborah: needs to be covered?

Tzviya: addressed in WCAG.

Deborah: still view of moving content.
... , I think this is covered enough.
... loss of functionality. defining for Romain.
... , Pre-School through Middle School

• Captions & Early Readers

• When students are too young to judge how much additional time they might need (or the activity is too new/innovative)

Mia: those are specific use-cases and our note is more general. these are specific cases for other things already discussed.

Deborah: Specialized Subject Areas (e.g. Chemistry, Grammar, Poetry)

(Can include providing authors with ability to polish pronunciations, pauses and stresses, as well as solutions such as subject-specific markup.)

• When implementations are tested, they might be tested with simpler content than what publishers need to use. Publishers should be able to submit samples to a test suite for verifying subject-specific readiness.

scribe: : Allowing Versions

(versions & third-party, second-party or first-party patches.)

https://www.w3.org/dpub/IG/wiki/Allow_Different_Math_Pronunciations

https://www.w3.org/dpub/IG/wiki/SVGCrowdDesc

scribe:https://www.w3.org/dpub/IG/wiki/AAC_Contextual_Vocabulary
... , Dragon has this, but we should come back to this.
... , • https://www.w3.org/dpub/IG/wiki/Accessibility_When_Users_Select_and_Highlight_Text (was https://www.w3.org/dpub/IG/wiki/Mark_Highlighting)

Tzviya: make annotations accessible. we talked about having a JOINT annotations/DPUB meeting

Deborah:https://www.w3.org/dpub/IG/wiki/MathSVGA11y

Tzviya: this is a bigger topic. got a manifesto from Peter K. on this.
... , HTML 5.1 is going to rec later this year. Leonie W. is leading this. They are refining the definition of ALT (Shane is working on this.) is there a Character max. and I want to know what that is.

Deborah: I want someone from DPUB in those discussions.

George: their descriptions of using alt are different than what we defined… image maps etc…

Tzviya, if they are refactoring 5.1… someone maybe should join the A11Y TF of HTML

Deborah: I would but would need to be invited to that group.
... , I will discuss with Tzviya later about this. About revising versioning / structure in Alt., languages would be great.
... , Support for multiple languages or versions for image descriptions
... , chapter with multiple images here is some charts with german, spanish, french alts.

Mia, alt just doesn't go with the reuse of the same image.

Deborah, Personalization which is already covered. this is really long

Tzviya, bibliography is mostly done. Its in the script section on top with double brackets choose a word dpuba11y you see the href field, and other fields. its manual but there is a template and you get the references. Any HREF to external should use this.

Charles: I could take on some of this while you are on vacation.

Tzviya: Will be back after presidents day.

George: I think with the dpub ref. wcag that this note will be very important. Unless there is something we need to do in the a11y profile that points to this. Excluding Silverlight..
... , once we get this infront of the WG the epub3.1 WG make sure it can be referenced would be my hope.

Tzviya & George, drops off.

Deborah: todo's I will work on this after noon.
... ARIA labelledBy but that is only exposed to AT: Bring up this issue in DPUB meeting Monday… didn't happen. Aria labeled by is only exposed to AT which causes problem. so those who don't use AT to get access to this.
... , we need use-cases for ARIA-labelledBy to be exposed to users outside of those using AT. We need to talk to Tzviya on this.

Charles: need back on contact points in appendix get feedback if ok.

Deborah: we need to come up with a plan to get this in shape for IDPF meetings. I think we need to get it cleaner but I don't think it has to be a published draft.

Mia: yes agreed

Charles: asks how to present this in the IDPF meeting.

Deborah: going over every bullet is a bad idea.

<dkaplan3> Specifically the ARIA problem is that labelledby is one example of the many aria attributes that's only exposed to AT, when users with accessibility needs but without AT also sometimes need access to the information (in this case, I think it came up in the context of semantically meaningful list head.)

Deborah: , send out possibly over to them first. explain this is a live draft and its goal it to expose to other WAI groups in W3C. reiterate and then ask for questions.

charles: will discuss the epub3.1 a11y profile how it will link to this NOTE.

Deborah: and then you can bring back any issues / gaps that the IDPF raises back to this group.

Charles: yes
