Still View Moving Content

Facilitating study by providing access to content that is not moving or quickly changing
- Use case
- When educational content is moving, it is possible that not all users will be able to absorb the materials at the pace set by the movement. This may be due to disability, technology choices/availability or other factors. For example, a user with low vision might need to pause a math video and move the magnification over the math expressions in order to see all of the content. Similarly, a user working on a mobile device might need to zoom in to see the content's detail and this might take more time than allowed by the motion. Also, a user who reads more slowly due to dyslexia might also need more time with the content and/or need time with the content while it is not moving. In addition, any time any student is struggling with a concept, more time may be needed.
- WCAG 2.0 2.2 directly states this concept at a high level and Success Criterion 2.2.2 addresses the need to pause, stop or hide moving content, which prevents the distraction that moving content might pose to accessing other content on the same page and which works well for entertainment video and most non-educational content.
- However, a resource could pass 2.2.2 without giving users access to analyze the content at their own pace. For example, it is becoming common to show an advertisement when a user pauses a video. This doesn't work well for important educational content.
- Allow the user to read text, equations & diagrams while they are not moving, autoscrolling or being automatically changed/replaced.
