Frederick Hirsch — Nokia & Chair W3C Device APIs Working Group

A user-centric approach is essential for meaningful privacy that meets user expectations and enables accountability. In the W3C Device APIs working group we approached this issue in the context of defining APIs that would be part of an application including both browser and server components. We considered privacy issues in this context and documented some of our findings, including privacy requirements, Web Application Privacy Best Practices and Privacy Rulesets. We also recognized the difficulty of addressing privacy without an end-end viewpoint (see also Position Paper to Policy WS). Usability and not training users to click through prompts presented challenges, addressed with notions of implicit consent where possible, despite limitations. Conveying user expectations could offer a more powerful approach toward accountability and be part of a user-centric approach.

I am interested in this workshop as it relates to our previous efforts in this area.
