Requiring alternative version from the same URI would not be logical if the content in question is part of the process. In other words, you normally would not switch to alternative version or text-only version in the middle of a check-out process. You normally do it at the beginning of the process that lead to throught the original or alternative version.

Proposed Change:

Add \"except if the content is part of a process and that alternative version selection can be made by the user at the beginning of the process.\" to 4.2.1. Yes, I know this is longwinded. It is not a live or die problem. But it would make logical sense.; Related issues: (space separated ids); WG Notes: [Alex] I'd also add that user can also specify the alternative mode at the personalization, login, or registration page. This is a far more efficient process, where applicable, for developers and users than providing alternate URI in every page. [TEAMB] Discussed 01 Feb 2007 resolution: Accept 836 as proposed http://www.w3.org/WAI/GL/2007/02/01-wai-wcag-minutes.html {not-accept} @@Response to commenter; Resolution: We have moved discussion of alternate versions of content to the Conformance section of the Guidelines, and we have clarified by adding the following conformance criterion: "Alternate Versions: If the Web page does not meet all of the success criteria for a specified level, then a mechanism to obtain an alternate version that meets all of the success criteria can be derived from the nonconforming content or its URI, and that mechanism meets all success criteria for the specified level of conformance. The alternate version does not need to be matched page for page with the original (e.g. the alternative to a page may consist of multiple pages). If multiple language versions are available, then conforming versions are required for each language offered. This still does not permit a many-to-many matching, as separate processes would imply.; (Please make sure the resolution is adapted for public consumption)
