Hi Robert I sit on the WCAG and I have one of your recommendations for consideration here that I’m not clear on. The recommendation says: “§ Guidelines should provide additional guidance and examples are needed to address user navigation to errors once they are identified.� Could you clarify that so that we can take it into consideration? Errors can be identified on a screen through a variety of methods. These can be pop-ups, list of errors at the top of the page, "red ball" indicators next to a field, etc. First, there needs to be guidance and examples on placing focus on the error or list of errors so that the user knows immediately that there are errors. Secondly, if there is a list of errors or a pop-up, then there needs to be examples and instructions on how to get to the field in question and display/speak the error in order for the user to correct. ALso in issue 681 Robert makes the following clarification when asked by Gregg. "Could this be part of a basic Application note?" SSA: Yes add the following advisory techniques -"placing focus on the error" - Avoiding using the same words or letter combinations to begin each item of a drop down list. -"Pop-up error messages" Note: I wrote up same letter drop down menus here. http://www.eramp.com/david/same_letters.htmI did testing of pop-up error messages with a blind user and he liked them better than errors listed at the top of the page. Resolution: There are advisory techniques for SC 2.5.3 that cover much of the SSA recommendations. They include. -Validating form submissions on the server (future link) -Re-displaying a form with a summary of errors (future link) -Providing error notification as the user enters information (future link) -Assisting the user in making corrections by providing links to each error (future link) -Highlighting or visually emphasizing errors where they occur (future link) -Supplementing text with non-text content when reporting errors (future link) In addition, we are adding the following advisory techniques. -"Placing focus in the field containing the error" -"Avoiding use of the same words or letter combinations to begin each item of a drop-down list" And we have linked this SC to the following advisory technique: "Providing client-side validation and alert" NOTE: "(future link)" is what we call all techniques that we have identified and are listed in our "Understanding WCAG" and our "Quick Reference" documents but have not yet been fully written up.
