Web Services And Semantics: Standardization Status

• Standardization of the Web services infrastructure at W3C:
  • SOAP 1.2: messaging framework
  • XOP+MTOM+RRSHB: optimized message transmission
  • WS-Addressing 1.0: message and service addressing information
  • WSDL 2.0: service description
  • WS-CDL 1.0: choreography description
• Now looking into expressing semantics

The Road To Standardization

• Depending on the technology: different standards bodies
• W3C: Web architecture and core technologies
• Pre-requisites:
  • Community in the area
  • Being able to find consensus to build a standardized solution
• W3C tools to start new work:
  • Member Submission: proposing next steps, a starting point, etc.
  • Workshop: discuss new areas of interest
  • Charter: end result to put a proposal in front of the W3C Members for discussion

Workshop On Frameworks For Semantics In Web Services

• 9-10 June at Digital Enterprise Research Institute (DERI), Innsbruck, Austria
• Goals:
  • Bring the Semantic Web Services community together
  • Dialog between the Semantic Web Services and the Web services communities
  • Identify next steps for W3C
• Discussed:
  • Complete ontology-based frameworks: OWL-S, WSMO, both received as W3C Member Submissions
  • Semantic annotations in Web services description: WSDL-S
  • Use cases

Next Steps

• Some preference expressed for a first simple step: e.g. semantic annotations in Web services description
• Industry asking for work on concrete scenarios and requirements
• W3C Team currently evaluating workshop results
