Places Community Group

Place data has many uses, including augmented reality browsers, gazetteers, location-based social networking games, geocaching, mapping, navigation systems, and many others. In addition, the group will explore how the geospatial industry could best use, influence and contribute to Web standards.

POI microdata

Hello group. As some of you know, there’s already a conceptual model for POI data started in the W3C. Although that work is now dormant, it is being carried on by the OGC in terms of standardizing the conceptual model and the XML encoding.

I’d like to use this group to work out a microdata format for points of interest data. I have an example posted here:
http://openpois.ogcnetwork.net/microdata/2349e34d-929d-45ec-8a79-12625264b874.html

It looks pretty good in the Structured Data Testing Tool. This basically uses the Place object. I’d like to get even more semantics into it, but that’s the topic of another discussion. First, what do people this of this so far?

p.s. OpenPOIs has over 9 million POIs in it, which all are marked up this way.
