W3C announces its fourth
Workshop on Mobile and Web Technologies in Social and Economic Development, in Dar es Salam, Tanzania on 4-5 June. Today, more than half the world's population lives on less than $3 a day, and has no access to healthcare, education, government services, etc. But the strong growth in the mobile phone use offers new opportunities for improvement. The potential of simple ICT services on mobile devices to increase people's income has been demonstrated. However, there are still many challenges to overcome in order to realize the full potential of mobile and Web technologies in this area. The aim of this Workshop is to explore how to lower the existing barriers and to identify key directions for future exploration. Learn more about participation in the Workshop as well as

Alan Bird Joins W3C Staff as Global Business Development Lead

W3C welcomes J. Alan Bird to the W3C staff as the new Global Business Development Lead. Mr. Bird will lead W3C efforts internationally to strengthen the W3C Membership program, identify business development strategies, and seek new revenue streams to support the organization's mission. As the Web creates and transforms a growing number of industries, W3C has created a senior business development position to ensure that a more diverse set of stakeholders can participate in W3C work. Initially, Mr. Bird will focus on development in the areas of Web and Television,and Mobile Web. In addition, he will strengthen our business strategies internationally, working with partners in various regions. Mr. Bird brings 30 years of experience in the IT industry to his new role. In previous roles, Mr. Bird has focused on enterprise systems management and applications development, specializing in building partnerships that benefit end users.
