Editor's Report

James integrated most of Rich's comments into the User Context draft.

Janina and Michael note (referring to an earlier item) the need to coordinate with other working groups at TPAC regarding agenda.

James (resuming report): comments have been addressed in the draft; questions remain about some of the comments, which James raised on list.

All of the changes were editorial.

James corresponded with WebApps regarding privacy issues and geolocation. Concerns were raised by geolocation about a proposal for the geolocation API to follow IndieUI in allowing the author to specify a rationale when prompting for permission to access information.

James notes the concern and plans to modify the draft. The concern is that such a dialogue could be misused to deceive users.

James suspects that his example (as provided in the current draft) could have been the basis of the concern, but there are other ways of implementing the requirement. For example, the author-supplied message can be hidden by default, but revealed as necessary by the user.

Janina notes that users' needs ought to be treated seriously in this respect and that the requirement giving rise to the proposal for author-supplied rationales should not be dismissed.

James suggests having it not disclosed by default.

James clarifies his proposed change: to adjust his example of possible UA rendering, i.e., the example dialogue graphic.

James: this may, for example, involve two graphics: the first is a dialogue requeesting information with an icon to reveal further details; when this is activated, the author-supplied rationale is presented.

Janina and James note (responding to Rich) that a response is expected from the Privacy Interest Group, but they seem to be generally comfortable with our approach.

Rich notes that we've taken the appropriate step of inviting their review.

James: he added a note stating that the screen reader properties may be at risk.
