It is both possible and highly encouraged for collaborative groups to install their own metadata server. The Annotea server code is available for such purposes and can be installed by following the Annotea service installation instructions.
The Annotea server is a general purpose RDF store, with a general Algae query interface and a couple of optimized queries for annotations, threads etc. The RDF store is built on top of a general SQL store. The server implementation consists of perl code scripts that are activated from the server's CGI-interface.
