Summary

  • Can we downsize the W3C? There are activities within the W3C that are clearly attached to technologies that have lost in the marketplace. Trimming the fat may help avoid tensions in goals.
  • The W3C has put itself into a position of trying to choose winning technologies, but why? There are many high-profile successes and failures. The W3C can instead offer its unique services (referrees, servers, tech, patents) much more widely, allow competition, and only come in after a party has won in the marketplace to give it an official stamp of approval.
