The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) is an international consortium founded and directed by Tim Berners-Lee to develop the open standards that are the foundation of the Web. We recognize the importance of providing pragmatic teaching materials for technologies to promote best practices, accessibility, and quality content and applications. The Webcraft Activity Lead will drive adoption of open standards in teaching and training organizations, through distribution of free curriculum materials developed in collaboration with educators, industry, government bodies, technology vendors, and developers, designers, and students. This position is for a coordinator, not necessarily an educator, but requires application of solid pedagogical methodology.

Responsibilities

Webcraft Activity Lead for the World Wide Consortium (W3C), to be responsible for developing and maintaining curriculum materials for educators to use in teaching Web development and design. Together with the W3C Director, staff, and membership, will develop a business plan for the sustainable development and deployment of a Web education curriculum. Among the specific responsibilities, the Webcraft Activity Lead will:

  • Integrate and expand existing curriculum efforts, such as WaSP Interact Curriculum.
  • Work with developers to create infrastructure for peer-review and karma systems for ongoing transparent content creation and review.
  • Liaison with educational organizations who wish to use or contribute to the curriculum.
  • Advocate for and promote adoption of curriculum materials by government bodies, through sanction and policy.
  • Work with like-minded organizations internationally to translate, localize, and adopt curriculum materials.
  • Write grant proposals and organize fund-raising activities to make activity self-sustaining.
  • Attend conferences and help plan outreach events related to the Web and Web education.

Requirements

Candidates must possess the following qualifications:

  • 3-5 years active development or design experience using open Web technologies such as HTML, CSS, and Javascript.
  • Excellent English oral and written communication skills.
  • Motivational leader, with strong human relations skills and experience coordinating and motivating volunteers.
  • Proficient in writing for a business and academic audience.
  • Skilled at consensus building and comfortable working in a highly collaborative (and distributed) environment.
  • Willing and able to travel internationally.

The following are desirable qualifications:

  • 3-5 years experience in teaching Web design and development, with a focus on accessible and inclusive design.
  • Experience with strategic planning and project management.
  • Fluency in a language other than English.
  • Work experience in international environments.
  • Experience with media relations.
  • Experience developing a curriculum.
