Alice posts a photo in her photo album and makes it visible only to Bob. Bob does not have an account on Alice's server. Bob can view the photo. Bob's sister Mary copies the URL that Bob accessed. Mary cannot see the photo.

Alice creates a profile for her business as a paid "dominatrix". She makes this profile available to some of her selected customers (who do not have accounts on her server), but it cannot be seen by the boss at her day job at her church.

Andy creates a spreadsheet of his department's budget and makes it available only to members of his company's finance team. None of them have accounts on Andy's server. The URL is publicly visible. His company's main competitor visits the URL and is unable to see his spreadsheet.

Alice sends a private message to Bob. Bob is not only on another server but has a gmail account and receives an email notification of this activity. Alice does not want her private message indexed or even seen by Google.

Jim creates a chatroom and provides access to Bill and Mary, neither of whom have accounts on Jim's server.

Bob create a webpage and makes it visible to Amelia. Ruth visits the webpage and gets permission denied. Amelia visits the webpage and can see it perfectly.

Bill creates a public post and sends it to friends on Diaspora and Pump.io and Friendica and Redmatrix and GNU-social. He changes his mind and deletes it. It is removed from all of the recipients' streams on all of the networks.

Jim writes a post on Patricia's "wall". Jim does not have an account on Patricia's server. Patricia responds. Jim goes back to her wall and posts a followup comment.

Oh yeah, the most import part. Bob's service provider (abc.com.z) shuts down abruptly leaving him in a lurch. He creates a new account at xyz.com.z from a thumb drive where his account was backed up. He sends a post to all his friends - who are still friends with him. He doesn't ahve to make friends with his friends all over again just because he changed servers. He can also still see the photo on Alice's server. Alice did nothing to change Bob's identity from abc.com.z to xyz.com.z on the photo - because it is visible to "Bob".
