Indoor Navigation

From Linked Building Data Community Group
  • Title: Indoor Navigation
  • Description: Publish 3D floor plans to support indoor navigation and link it with GIS data. There are many application scenarios there such information is needed, for instance to navigate within a building as offered by Google Indoor Maps, the Personal Indoor Assistant or the IfcViewer tool. Further information about indoor activities can be found at the following OSM pages. From a technical point of view this use case is an interesting example for Linked Building Data because (1) required building information is already available in typical BIM-IFC data sets and limited to an easily manageable size, (2) a number of existing tools, specifications and guidelines can be used to implement such use case and (3) building data can be linked with available GIS data to show the use of other data sources.
  • Data Domain(s): Product (includes Geometry, excludes devices) , Geolocation and Weather
  • Objectives: Show case for the use of Linked Building Data derived from available BIM-IFC files. A lot of questions can be answered if having a real example and help to get started using ifcOWL and Linked Building Data.
  • Stakeholders: building/facility owner, facility manager, occupant
  • Requirements:
  1. Definition of required BIM data + binding to IFC (mvdXML specification)
  2. Service to extract BIM data (remove irrelevant or private data)
  3. Service to map IFC data to ifcOWL RDF graph
  4. Strategy to publish ifcOWL data
  5. Solutions to integrate GIS data (identify and capture links between buildings and GIS)
  6. Solutions to query the Linked Building Data and to present results
  • LD Benefits:
  1. data integration
  • Challenges
  1. find building/facility owners who are willing to publish their BIM data
  • External sources:
  1. mvdXML for describing required subset of IFC (http://www.buildingsmart-tech.org/specifications/mvd-overview/mvd-overview-summary)
  2. ifcOWL (https://www.w3.org/community/lbd/2014/12/12/ifcowl-ontology-file-added-for-ifc4_add1/)
  3. OpenGIS (LD) data – OpenStreetMap (http://linkedgeodata.org)
  4. Guidelines to publish LD (http://www.ready4smartcities.eu/guidelines)
  5. Present the data in a user friendly way (e.g. http://vizicities.com/)
  6. IndoorGML - Indoor navigation standard released by OGC (http://www.opengeospatial.org/node/2157) - based on XML/XSD
