Linked Data Vocabulary For Server Metadata

From Web of Things Interest Group
  • An open ecosystem of IoT services will depend on interoperability across servers, but no one protocol is appropriate in all situations so it is crucial that there be a way to find mutually compatible protocols

This work item will define a standard RDF vocabulary of terms for describing which protocols, data formats and bindings a give server supports.

When a script on a server (or Web page) wants to create a scriptable object as a proxy for a "thing" on another server, the starting point is the URI for the thing's description. This will enable the first server to identify the second server. The next step is access that server's description of which protocols it supports. A constrained device might support just one protocol, e.g. CoAP, whilst a more powerful server is likely to support several. The first server can then identify which protocols it has in common with the second server and proceed to communicate with it to set up the desired proxy.
