There are use cases for both logos (which vary in aspect ratio) and icons/avatars (which should be square) and as such it may be worth including both. Compatibility with Atom may also be useful.

"It's easier to convert a square to an almost square rectangle (eg 57x60) than
to convert a rectangular logo to a square. Giving users the ability to
advertise both should ultimately result in a higher quality and better fit for
purpose."
