The expected results contain unexpected whitespace between the <department> and <employee> elements.

Bug fix applied as suggested.

Still not quite right I'm afraid.  There is some whitespace in the input file between </name> and <job> which is absent from the expected result.

I'd suggest eliminating whitespace in the input to make life easier.

I have decided to fix this by using XPath in the assertions. Changed to use the <assert/> tag
